How Green Becomes Wood

Alec looked at Xander before answering, and Xander only shrugged. "Becky has been showing Milo interest, and he told her today that he wasn't interested at all. He was apparently very polite, but you know how it is. I assume."

"Ah, nothing too uncommon then," Dark replied, holding out one hand so Enkidu would bring him the ball, letting the dog have a good through to break up Ivy's, "They will both recover soon enough."

"It must have been hard for Milo to tell her that, with the way that he is," Daizi said sympathetically.

"I look forward to being past those turmoils, too," Alec said brightly. "Someday. Some way."

Xander found the ball and gave it a good throw. "Or never getting into them in the first place."

"Aw, but you might deny yourself the chance for a good snuggle friend," Alec said, pouting.

Xander shrugged. "Maybe, but that's the chance I'm willing to take. For now, I've got you and a giant stuffed snake. Good enough for me."

"See? Snuggle friend is completely valid," Alec said with a nod. "Isn't that right, Xander? It's okay if you don't want one, but it's said to be so firmly closed to the idea."

"I am firmly ignoring this conversation," Xander said dryly as he threw the ball.

"All right, fair enough," Alec shrugged.

"It most certainly is not." Dark said seriously, unswayed as Daizi propped herself up on her knees and wrapped her arms around his shoulders, bringing her face very near to his.

"I'm your special snuggle friend," She teased, which only made Dark shake his head.

"No, my love, that does not work for me," Dark replied, "It is so juvenile it comes back around into being nefarious, and not the devilish kind of nefarious."

Alec laughed. "Well, I'm glad I gave you yet another thing to tease Ba with, Mama. I am definitely going to stay out of that argument." He got to his feet and said, "And I haven't had a proper greeting since I got distracted with awesome art festival things! Where's little Ivy? The miniest of the family?" He started chasing after her.

When Alec began chasing her, Ivy shrieked and laughing when hurrying off, still not quite able to run but coming much nearer to it.

Daizi stayed propped up on her knees with her arms around her husband, but settled down so her chin was resting on his shoulder, "Are you looking forward to Spring Break, Xander?"

Alec laughed maniacally and chased after her with nonsense noises.

"Definitely," Xander said firmly. "Not sure what kind of things to plan for, but I'm looking forward to different. Relaxation."

"That was a benefit of being a teacher," Dark said, "although if I did not live in a dual-income household, I probably would have had to find a part-time job during breaks. It was quite nice, though."

"Teachers should be paid more. If you look at the hours the average teacher puts into their job, it's a hella lot more than your average 9-5 job," Xander remarked. "If they were paid more, more people would want to be teachers."

Alec turned a cartwheel as he followed Ivy around the yard.

"You do not need to tell me," Dark sighed, "Teachers are one of the most important jobs in the world, yet they are undervalued. It never changes."

Ivy stopped and stared wide-eyed at Alec.
