How Green Becomes Wood

Alec snorted as he helped Dark load the trunk. "No, I need to practice reading Arabic outside of structured lessons. It's surprisingly hard to find Arabic in the wild here in the middle of America, so I was taking my opportunity, just like you."

"Oh," Dark said, pleased, "That is a good idea. When Ivy gets older, we were going to enroll her in Arab school on the weekends. I cannot imagine how much more difficult it must be to learn a language when it is not around you all of the time."

"She's totally going to hate you for that in the immediate even if she thanks you for it later. School on the weekends," Alec snickered, getting in the car and buckling up.

"We probably should. We have been talking with each other since before we went on vacation, but we have only been meeting in public. He is also from Iraq, we left around the same time. It is nice." Dark explained as he drove back towards home.

"Khalil Al-Attar," Dark answered, "He has a wife and sons now, but he didn't then. Some of his family is still over there, some did not survive, and some live in Europe now. His sister Karima lives in Hungary, actually."

"Over one million Iraqis were displaced during the war," Dark said solemnly, "It is a common story, I fear. But Khalil and I are not family, but it is good to know someone from the same city as me again."

"Hmm, we'll come back to that family thing after you two have had a couple more months to chat and maybe meet each other's families," Alec said with a slight smirk. "you should totally get together with him again! You hardly see anyone anymore."

"Did I often see people before?" Dark asked flatly, remembering the twins teasing him for only being friends with Cooger, who he still saw regularly. "He already has seen my family, I am fairly certain Xander has also been to the store. We bring Ivy regularly, and Daizi is who had us meet. But it might be nice to have him for dinner."

"I think Lex might be seeing Cooger more often than you, and he's normally coming to you rather than the other way around," Alec mused, "and it's one thing to see people at your place of business, and another thing entirely to see them in a relaxed setting. So, dinner it is! Actually, that reminds me, we should tell Aunt Ciara about Tristan and maybe have them both over for dinner."

Dark frowned, not liking the implication, "He went to Lex so much because she hired him. It is not like he is over there every day, we are both busy people. Anyway, if we have Khalil over for dinner, he is also coming to see me, not the other way around." With a glance to Alec, he said, "If you want both over, and Xander is okay with it, we can. You should give them both warning about who will be there, though."

"True, but you will have extended the invitation," Alec pointed out with a smile. "And I think I would like that, but first I'll talk to Xander and make sure he's not going to be all weird about it."

"Will do!" Alec said happily. He glanced at Dark. "I rather like him. He doesn't feel like an uncle, not really, not like how Aunt Ciara feels like an aunt, but he's nice and passionate. He's also one of the chillest people I've ever met."
