How Green Becomes Wood

Cooger snorted, shaking his head, "Now, you listen here, you've gotta be very special to get the answer to that question. I'm not revealing that sort of information to just anyone who asks."

Lex gave Cooger a sideways glance and smirked. "I hope for a lot of things. Sometimes I get them, sometimes I don't, but I don't push where it's not wanted. I'm not too shy to work for what I want, but sometimes I just wait to see what happens."

Lex smiled faintly without looking at him. "I hope for a few things. Companionship with someone who's also my friend would be nice. I value friendship over a closer companionship, to put it delicately, so if companionship's not in the cards, I'm okay with that, but it'd be nice for a little more."

"Oh." Cooger replied, blinking. He hadn't expected---he supposed he had hoped, but---He swallowed, a faint blush creeping back into his face. When was the last time someone had asked him out? Instinctively he almost made a joke about how it's better to ask out the person who is driving than to be asked out by the person driving, because if you reject the driver, you better hope they take it well. But this didn't seem like the time for that joke. Wow, he was taking a really long time to reply. She was going to think he wasn't interested, but that wasn't true. He had some apprehension, but he, you know, liked... "I'd like that."

Lex smiled and gave a little nod to herself. "Good. Me too. In which case, I guess I'd better ask you out to somewhere! How about maybe a lunch somewhere tomorrow? You know a good diner or a cafe?"

Lex chuckled and nodded. "Fair enough! I don't like pickles. Never have, but I'll eat them if I have to. Other than that, anything's good for me. How about some kind of sandwich place, then? I think I've seen a couple."

She hesitated a moment, considering. It was her policy to never let the guy pick her up for at least the first two dates so she could have an escape route and so they wouldn't know where she lived if it could be avoided, but none of that really applied to Cooger. He'd already proven himself many times over. She smiled at him and gave a nod. "It would be a pleasure, sir. Thanks."

Lex snickered and hopped out of the truck. "Looking forward to it, Coog! See you then, and say hi to your family for me if you're heading that way." She gave him a wave before closing the door and heading to her house, grinning a bit foolishly. She was getting too old for butterflies, but here they were!
