How Green Becomes Wood

Milo nodded heavily, still looking at the ground, "That's probably the smart idea. I really don't think it doesn't involve me, anyway. Not in any real, practical way. But it's only fair to talk to him, if someone is sitting near you all the time, it, you know, makes sense to say hi."

"I don't see any reason to. It's not like we chose to all be crammed in a school room together, anyway," Xander said lightly.

"Tomorrow. I'll try saying hello tomorrow," Alec agreed.

Xander sighed. "Do what you like, but please don't get into a fight. I don't know if I can take that guy without hurting him. Or me."

"I don't think saying hello will cause a fight," Milo said, being at least a bit rational, "people are not tigers. If you get attacked just for saying hello, you have bigger problems. That or he does."

"So, Xander's a tiger?" Alec grinned. "That sounds about right."

"Gee, thanks, Milo," Xander said dryly, not actually at all offended. "At least that's a compliment to my magnificent growl."

"You do have a good growl, though it's not as good as Ba's," Alec mused.

"Do you fight people at hello?" Milo asked with a bit of sarcasam slipping into his voice before making a face at the twins, "What do you mean Mr. Dark has a good growl? What does that mean?"

"It means that when he really chooses to drop his tone into a rumble, you pay attention," Xander said seriously.

"It helps that he almost never does it, so it's intense," Alec nodded.

"Oh," Milo nodded, understanding now, "I heard that when... you know." For the first time in months he remembered the time he filmed that assault. With so much distance between the two, he said, "He was kinda frightening."

"Yeah," Xander said, and they both got quiet for a while. Finally, Xander said, "We gotta get on to class. See you later, and look after yourself, Stitch."

"Have fun!" Alec said with a wave.

"Sorry," he mumbled, "I shouldn't have brought it up." He shook his head, "I'll see you later. Don't, uh, say hi to any tigers." He held up one hand as a parting wave and then went off to his own class.

The rest of the day went by relatively unremarkably, and soon enough - and not soon enough for Xander's liking - it was time to head back home so they could eat, do homework, maybe sleep, and start all over again.

The twins headed out for the van, and Xander looked for Milo to give him his customary offer for a ride. Alec said goodbye to his friends like they wouldn't be seeing each other again for a long time, but they finally arrived at the van to head home.

Milo rejected the ride, like he always did, and biked his way home after making his goodbyes. If nothing else, he always made sure to say goodbye, now.

At home, Daizi was singing to Ivy with the sound of simple, rhythmic drumming. With the noise, they didn't hear the twins come inside.

The twins heard the singing when they entered and touched the salt and took off their shoes like usual. Then they went to find Daizi and Ivy and sat down on the floor. With barely a glance at each other, they started drumming on their knees as well to keep up the rhythm.

It was actually Dark who was sitting with drum, a bodhrán specifically. It was actually something Daizi had bought for her rituals, and something Dark had really only learned to play because for when she asked for his help with them. Having live, rhythmic music, at times, helped for what she was trying to achieve.

This, however, was no ritual, and he nodded to the twins when they entered. It only took Daizi a moment of confused about the additional sounds before recognizing the twins were home. She was standing up, facing where Ivy was sitting propt up on the couch, absolutely delighted.

Trickster came a'calling To find a totem here
To teach the foolish heart of man
Without installing fear.
Daizi sang, doing her best to act out the song for her daughter.

Bear and Cat and Tiger tried but had too many claws.
When she sang, Dog and Wolf though wise indeed
Had teeth t'were quite the fright
which Ivy was absolutely thrilled by.
And Owl with his tawny eyes could only see at night.
"No, " the Trickster said at last
"Teachers, I see many.
But My way is full of laughter and in you I see not any."

When the lyrics about the crow, coyote, rabbit, and raven came, she struggled a bit with not being able to tell the twins apart, but she hoped it made sense she indicated Alec as the Raven, tasked to steal the sun and Xander as the coyote, to teach men by our naughtiness what really should be right, and Dark as the Crow, tasked to teach men of pride and helping. Ivy, of course, she made the rabbit, whose very simple humbleness would steal the hearts of men.

The twins couldn't help grinning at her words and tapped along with Dark, pleased to be included as they drummed along. Alec added a few humming noises where he thought it was appropriate. It was a fun song, and he hoped to learn it.

When the song ended, Daizi came up and snuggled Ivy as she declared her the King of Beasts. Then, laughing, she dropped down on the couch with Ivy, "How was that?" she asked, "Did I get the two of you right?"

"Browns and furs, I would guess," Dark answered, setting the drum and stick aside, no longer needing it.

"We've been playing so many songs with her," Daizi said, lying on her back and lifting Ivy above her head, "She loves it."

"If you'd like to," Daizi said, bringing Ivy back down briefly before lifting her up again, "You don't really need to ask permission. It's not a scheduled thing, really. Just when I feel like it, or when it seems like she wants it. You can sing to her on your own, too."

"We will be the singing family," Alec said happily. "Oh! By the way, something interesting happened at school today."

Xander quickly interfered. "Don't tell them that."

Alec frowned. "Why not?"

"Because it's boring," Xander said as significantly as he could.

"Why..." Alec's eyes widened when he realized telling Dark and Daizi about the footballer would mean telling them about the near fight. "Oh, right, yes, you're right, it's not interesting."
