How Green Becomes Wood

"Our vow renewal isn't going to have those traditions," Daizi explained, waving one hand, "Our Halloween party does, and we do set up a place where people who don't want to participate in the Dummy Supper can eat without disturbing those of us who do celebrate, but... Most of the time our guests go along with it, because we're all in costume, our house is very spooky, and it creates the vibes of doing something which feels spooky and out of the ordinary. At the party I also perform tarot readings, there's incense, and we have an altar to the dead set up, and our guests are encouraged to bring offerings to or photographs of anyone they want to remember, but intermixed with all of it are all of the normal party activities like dancing and eating hor d'oeuvres, so people have fun and participate in the rest as much or as little as they like. It's a good party. It's more than just playing Monster Mash and treating it like any other house party." After a moment, she nearly screeched in frustration, "I'm sorry, I shouldn't talk so much about next year's Halloween party now. Not today, not this week. I think calling her tomorrow is absolutely perfect, and if she has suggestions for food or something, and we don't have the ingredients, we can get them, if it is important to you."

Alec smiled a little and reached over to pat Daizi's arm. "It's okay. I know you are looking forward to it."

"And we did ask, kind of," Xander agreed. "Sounds like a spooky, good time. And it's okay about the food. We don't have to do anything special."

Alec snapped his fingers. "Fried chicken! That's what we should have. I don't know if it was a favorite, but it was a good splurge meal sometimes."

Xander nodded. "Fried chicken is perfect. The rest... I don't know. I guess we'll just play tomorrow by ear."

"Deep fryers and deep frying scare me," Alec said flatly.

"I've never made it, either," Xander admitted. "I think we'd usually get it at a grocery store and then heat it up in the oven or toaster oven. Once, an air fryer. That was really good."

"The air fryer was the best!" Alec agreed emphatically.

"I think maybe getting it fresh would be nice for once, but I'm not sure where," Xander said.

"Oh, I know. We should ask Cooger who makes the best fried chicken to go!" Alec stated.

Daizi chuckled, "He would absolutely know the best place to go."

"I will ask him, and then he will probably call Daizi to be certain I am not having a mental breakdown." Dark replied with a little grin. "I am sure he can find your good grease."

"I can make one. I found a recipe online," Xander told him with a smirk. "I just need tiger nuts. Whatever those are. I'm guessing a nut of some kind. And if you lose, you could do something like buy me a few doughnuts."

"They're actually more similar to potatoes than nuts," Daizi mused, "The Arab market we go to probably sells them. I never expected to hear you mention them, though, where'd you hear about them?"

"I've never tried to make them, but I'm sure they are," Daizi said, standing up with Ivy, "I've got to go nurse her, but I hope your bet goes as it should."

Dark shook his head and began to clear the table. Part way through the evening chores, he checked his phone and went over to Xander, "Cooger says the best place is The Cluck Truck. He says it is an independent food truck, and there is not a chain on earth which surpasses it. He also says he has never heard the term 'good grease' before, but that sometimes you just want something that makes brown paper go clear, regardless of the cost."

"You ow me a few doughnuts, then, and we'll get a bunch of biscuits to eat with the chicken," Xander assured Dark. "They soak up the grease. And you can get something else that won't make you sick."

"I will get you donuts, do you have a preferred place?" He asked, putting his phone away, "I suspect the fried chicken will be fine, or I hope it will. I will try it. Some foods though, I do not understand how other people eat it."

"Sometimes I think that about some of the foods you like," Xander said dryly. "Anywhere's good for doughnuts. Except that one place with the sun as a mascot. Not great doughnuts and overpriced."

"I want to argue that, but I know it would not be fair of me to," Dark replied blandly, "I will get you donuts, not from the place with the sun. When you can, we still need the ingredient list for Friday, also. I can do the actual shopping, but that is important."
