How Green Becomes Wood

"We did not make you," Dark chuckled, walking back to the sign, "I explicitly said I would not make you, then you said it was okay. And now we know about your height discrepancy, so that is nice." He stood against it, his head of course rising above the end of the ruler and Daizi stood where she was directed, just barely below the 6ft mark.

"The path should be wide enough for her," Daizi said, "but I don't want her to not feel included."

"I don't think she could ever feel not included," Alec assured her as Xander carefully took two pictures for them. "How about we use the stroller for now while she's happy to be distracted by things, and later, when she is getting sleepy and wants to be held, our arms won't be as tired."

"Got the picture," Xander announced.

"I suppose so," Daizi replied, taking Ivy once the picture was taken and squeezing her close, "She's just so squirmy."

"If she fusses we can take her out," Dark said, which Daizi couldn't argue with so she buckled Ivy back into her stroller.

"We're going to ask you for directions in the maze, baby," Daizi said, crouching near the stroller, "Because you'll be at the front."

"Maze time!" Alec cheered, hurrying ahead, but he slowed when he got too far ahead, never wanting to be too far removed from his family. "Here's the start!" he called back to them when he found the giant sign pointing the way. "Oh, look, here's a map. Should we take a picture of it?"

Xander lifted his phone and took a picture. "Done. In case we get lost."

"You don't need a map to get through a maze, you just keep one hand on the right side and trace yourself out," Daizi chuckled, stopping and touching the carefully grown corn, "It takes awhile, but you get out."

Dark peered up at it, "I always expect it to be shorter than I am. I am always pleased when it is not."

"Keeping your hand on the right side would take forever. There's a couple of loops," Alec said, frowning at the picture.

Xander stuck his phone back in his pocket. "We do it Mama's way, and if we get desperate, we have a backup plan."

"Then to the right!" Alec said, starting off to the left.

"No, Alec," Dark replied, nodding his heard to the right, "This way. Although we can always try to solve it on our own and then use other methods."

"I can't see the map to begin with." Daizi replied, walking with her cane flush against the wall so she could follow it, "I suppose we could all try our own ways and see who gets out first."

Alec spun on one foot and turned the direction Dark indicated. "This way!"

"You want us to split up in a corn maze? Isn't that the first step to turning a fun outing into a horror movie?" Xander remarked, following Daizi.

"What's the point of Halloween if we're never frightened?" Daizi asked with a grin, "I've got my cane for defense."

"Your left hand makes an L-shape when you see it," Dark commented, demonstrating, "That is how you can remind yourself what is left and what is right."

"Left, L, fingers," Alec mused, holding up his hands.

"I guess none of us are horny teenagers, so I guess our group will probably make it out alive," Xander said.

Alec tripped at Xander's words and quickly pretended he'd caught his toe on something. "We're coming up on a fork! Do we go right, Mama?"

"I think right's going to take us in the wrong direction," Xander stated.

"The point of my method is you basically walk around the entire maze, including dead ends, so that you don't miss the exit, but if you want we can try going left," Daizi said, tapping her cane around the corner.

"Taking risks is more fun anyway," Dark replied, turning Ivy left in her stroller.

The twins hesitated. The Alec went after Daizi, and Xander went after Dark.

"To adventure!" Alec cheered, putting one hand on Daizi's arm.

"To finding something edible at the end of the maze," Xander said dryly.

"You sound like a mouse in a maze," Alec laughed.

"We've barely been here an hour and you're already hungry?" Daizi asked, keeping her cane against the right side of the maze, even though they turned left, "You should've had a bigger breakfast."

"It may be more reasonable by the time we get out, depending on when we escape," Dark replied, "What do you think, Ivy-Qadira? Where do you think we should turn next?"

"I wish we could set her down and allow her to explore. I wonder how well she would do it given the chance to lead us," Daizi grinned. "I wonder if we could find maze that would be safe enough."

"She would be hilarious in a mirror maze. Maybe when she is walking."

"She'd run straight through the corn, I bet you," Xander said dryly.

"I saw a straw bale maze out there that is for little kids," Alec offered. "I bet it would be perfect for her!"

"If it has a clean enough floor for her to crawl on," Dark replied, peering down into the stroller where Ivy was happily watching the world go by, "I do not want her catching something."

"They have pony rides here. That will be fun for her," She wished Xander could be the one to hold her steady on the pony's back, but he couldn't touch her to do it. It seemed like the perfect thing for him to do with her.

"It's an outdoor working farm. I think clean is relative," Xander pointed out. "I bet it's not going to be any worse than when she helps Mama with the garden. It'll be fine." As long as she didn't try to eat anything.

"Pony rides? That sounds like a lot of fun!" Alec grinned. "I say we go left here!"

Dark looked at him and then looked down at Ivy, "We do not have a petting zoo at home."

"We can go there next," Daizi replied, as they turned left and ended up in a dead end. "Maybe we should've gone straight instead."

"I doubt they have a petting zoo inside the straw maze, either," Xander said reasonably. "Alec can hold her hands and help her walk through. I'd say you could, but I think walking bent like that for that long will break your back."

"Hmm, yes. Straight," Alec agreed. "Come on! Turning around, everyone!"

"No, but people walk from the petting zoo, with petty zoo on their shoes, and track it through the straw maze," He retorted and pointed to the ground, "Would you want to crawl around on that? You know she will put her hand in her mouth."

"Goose, can you peer over the top of the maze?"

Dark looked up and rocked up onto his toes, something he almost never needed to do, "Not quite. It is very strange for me."

"It'll be fine," Xander assured him. "With how closely you watch her, dirt won't stand a chance, and there's wipes in the bag."

Alec tugged lightly on Daizi's arm. "That way! I think I see daylight!"

"I see a white sign telling people not to start corn fights, run, or go through the corn stalks," Xander replied.
