How Green Becomes Wood

"He agreed in the moment." Daizi said, knowing she wouldn't actually force him if he still didn't want to go after recovering from the initial embarrassment. "And Ivy seemed to like their son."

"I am a 6'8 goth tattooed gothic man, of course he still recognized me," Dark grumbled, "He used to dye his hair pink."

If Ivy found a friend, then you have to go!" Alec urged. "For Ivy!"

"I guess that means He's allowed time to change him ans move on, at least outwardly, while you've been stuck in an aesthetic time capsule," Xander quipped.

Dark raised his head again and scowled at Xander, "Do you not have a place to be?"

"Aw, he is very handsome," Daizi defended, rubbing Dark's back, "It's just not a phase. And he doesn't straighten his hair anymore, so he doesn't look exactly like he used to."

"I do, but watching a grown-up stuck in teenage-type drama is hilarious and highly entertaining," Xander smirked.

"I have somewhere to be, and I really don't want to he late," Alec complained. "Come on! Leave Ba alone. You'll have plenty of time to watch him squirm at the dinner. Right, Mama?"

"He is very embarrassed," Daizi chuckled softly, rubbing her husband's back, "I know, Goose, it's unfair. There are only so many 6'8 Iraqi men and even fewer who are as attractive as you, you're not easy to forget."

"we are not going to the dinner."

Alec bounced toward the door as Xander walked toward it. "I'm looking forward to hearing all about it after work, and if you tell me when, I can pick up flowers for you!"

Xander headed out the door without his coat. "Just tell us when and where."

Daizi couldn't help but laugh. She was sympathetic to her husband's embarrassment but he was definitely being dramatic. Again, she repeated to him, after the twins had left, "Of course he remembered you. You are very, very hot and you have a great ass so you are extremely memorable."

"you do not get to call me hot as if you had not been laughing about this the entire way home."

"Well." She chuckled, "You can both be very hot and very dramatic. You do it so flawlessly. I'm deeply impressed by you, my love."

Ivy had been watching them all and now that her brothers were gone, she crawled over, pulled herself up to stand on the couch, and grabbed at her father's face, screeching at him.

Alec went to work, which went by smoothly and without any problems, thankfully. Tristan let him take home some of the extra ribbon cuttings that were not quite long enough to wrap around a bouquet. He did wonder why Alec wanted them, but Alec said he had a project in mind, qnd he didn't press.

Xander did really well in his Judo lesson, and his teacher told him about another informal Judo competition. He headed home, promising to consider going, but first he needed to talk to his parents about it.

By the time Dark needed to pick up Alec, Dark had largely recovered from his earlier embarrassment. Although that moment when he had introduced himself only to be told yeah, we used to date had been mortifying, but not enough to keep him draped over the couch all day. Especially not since anytime his face was on that level, Ivy stuck her fingers up his nose. It was adorable when she grabbed onto his beard. It was less adorable when she was trying to explore every facial orifice. Once both boys were home, he inquired about their schedule so he could set up this dinner with his ex. His ex Matt. The fact he didn't go by Matthew anymore was weirder than the polo shirt.

That night he barely slept at all, which he attributed to the stress of the day, but when he woke up he felt heavy, sort of like he had been sick. Daizi was still in bed with him, only until she knew he was up, at which point she kissed his shoulder, told him how much she loved him, and went to fetch their baby before it was time to start breakfast. It didn't strike him as odd that she knew he woke up feeling weird, but as he rolled onto his back and looked up at the ceiling, he couldn't quite figure out why he felt weird.

The twins were up at their usual time, and they didn't ask why Dark wasn't up yet. They chatted with Daizi, helped her with breakfast, and looked after Ivy until Xander took Alec to work, dropping him off at Tristan's shop before coming home. Normally, he would have headed straight into the backyard to deal with his own business, but instead he went to see if Dark or Daizi needed anything.

When Dark came downstairs, he seemed... mostly like himself. He still chatted with them, grumbled as he made coffee, and lifted Ivy above his head to kiss her tummy, but he seemed slower. Like there was someone dragging him down or like he was underwater. Still, it didn't seem like he was zoning out. His eyes just looked tired. When Xander came to check on him, he and Daizi were both on the floor with Ivy, teaching her to roll a ball back and forth like it was only an ordinary day.

"We are helping her with coordination," Dark said, his back against the wall, angled so he could see as much of the room as possible.

Daizi rolled the ball, which had a bell inside so she could track where it was, in the general direction she knew Ivy was in, "I'm worse at it than she is. But I think things are okay. Right, Goose?"

He watched Ivy hold the ball and carefully work out how to roll it, recalling when she couldn't even smile, and reached forward to catch the ball when her attempt went wide but lacked the power to make it to either parent, "Well done, tifla. Yes, I think she is learning quite well."

"Well she has not learned to kick yet," Dark replied, "but that is because she has not dared to stand independently. But I hope she does not play American football or rugby, I do not want her to develop CTE."

"Regardless of if she's interested in basketball or not, she'll be heavily encouraged to play it," Daizi pointed out.

"What's CTE? And why basketball?" Xander asked quizzically. "Because you two are tall? Not a guarantee she'll be tall, is it? 'Specially when considering." He used his socked foot to nudge the ball back toward Ivy when it came his direction.

"I do not know what the letters stand for, but it is a brain condition linked to repeated head trauma causing dementia in people as young as seventeen. It's often linked to mood changes and people with it tend to die early and more frequently from suicide or other violent deaths. There's also a potential it's linked towards more violence towards others. Right now, it can only be diagnosed after death." Dark bluntly explained while Ivy laughed crawling to get the ball.

"When considering what?" Daizi asked, "and it's not a guarantee she'll be tall, but it's likely. As far as babies go, she's already tall."

"Awesome," Xander said dryly, thinking of all the kids at school. He couldn't consider most of them friends, but he tolerated a lot of them, and even the ones he didn't like he wouldn't wish that on. "Considering she's a premie. Aren't they usually stunted in growth?"
