How Green Becomes Wood

Cooger chuckled and shut off the lights before climbing in bed after her. He wasn't as much of a cuddler as certain other people he knew, although he still liked it fine enough, and since he didn't know Lex's preferences, he lay on his side facing her so if she wanted to cuddle up, he could. Soon enough, he had also fallen asleep after what had ultimately been a very lovely, if unexpected day.

Across town, not all that unlike himself, Dark found himself awake. He rolled over to see his wife fast asleep and couldn't bring himself to wake her. Instead, he pulled the blankets more snuggly about her and crept out of bed and silently left the room. Feeling somber and heavy, he poured himself a glass of whiskey and after glancing outside, sat down and watched the snow fall. Come morning, none of it had stuck and he was making breakfast like it was any other day.

The twins came down the next morning, neither properly dressed, and followed the scent of food into the kitchen.

"Mmm, Ba! That smells good!" Alec complimented. "Is today a special day?"

"Yeah, we're going to go walking amongst the fish," Xander reminded him dryly, looking for any bites he could steal.

"Aw, They are so cute!" Alec squealed, flipping through the pictures. "They'll get adopted in no time. Look at this one! It's a little runt!" He showed it to Xander. "It's so daper and tiny!"

"Yep. It's cute," Xander agreed, trying to steal a bit of breakfast from under Dark's watchful eye.

"Most parents don't have teenagers willing to stick around for breakfast long enough to talk to them," Xander pointed out with a smirk. He did back off, though, and gave Dark space. He decided to make himself some coffee while he waited.

"I don't, but I want a jump start, which means I'll suffer through a few sips and then give the rest to him," Xander nodded to Alec, "and then make him your problem."

"I am not a problem!" Alec sniffed.
