As soon as Daizi was in bed for the night, she pulled the blanket over herself, rolled over onto her side, and cried. When she had earlier, when she was holding Alec, it was out of empathy and compassion. Now it was from grief and fear, and she wept bitterly, praying in desperation things would change and improve so she wouldn't need to live in fear. Dark crawled into bed beside her and wrapped her up in his arms, pulling her close to his chest. But he couldn't cry. Even after everything that happened that night, he couldn't. He hadn't been able to cry about anything that had happened over the past week. All he could do was hold his wife until she fell asleep, unknowingly echoing how she had consoled their son.
When his arm fell asleep beneath her weight and she was already in a deep sleep, he rolled onto his back and stared up at the top of their canopy bed. He might have fallen asleep for a little while, he wasn't certain, but he was aware he was very much awake, and so he got up. This night he couldn't go downstairs, because Xander was (hopefully) sleeping, but he paced the upper floor. He poked his head into the nursery to check on Ivy, smiling sadly at how peaceful and perpetually untouched she was by all of this. It was a horrible thing to know one day she'd be hurt by it too. One day she'd have to learn her father was broken deep down inside and it would be something she'd need to cope with. But that night, she slept soundly, in her cute little pajamas. He brushed the hair away from her forehead and wondered what must it be like to still be whole? He doubted he ever had been. At least by her age, he guessed, he already wasn't. And she was so little. He wondered if she'd remember him.
Then he forced himself away and shut the door quietly behind him and went into Alec's room. He had noticed light shining from beneath the door. Before shutting it off, he walked beside Alec's bed and adjusted the covers. Since Thursday, he had scarcely been around Alec and even now he had no idea if, come morning, things would be different between them. Xander would certainly still be angry with Alec. He wouldn't be shocked if Alec was still angry with him. All he could do was fix the covers, put one of the fallen stuffed animals back up onto the bed, and shut off the lights before he left.
Then he returned to his bedroom, and once again sat by the window to look out at the stars before finally falling asleep.
Come morning, he cooked breakfast like it was any other day while Daizi got Ivy ready for the day. When Xander emerged looking for food, Dark set out a plate for him, "You are up early. Did you sleep well?"
