How Green Becomes Wood

"Thank you," Xander said sincerely, proudly taking his creation back. "Where's Mama? This is her one chance to see a life-sized bilby!" He glanced at it. "At least, I think it's life-sized. I did my best based off online measurements and pictures." He walked deeper into the house, looking for his mother.

"I think she is in her office," Dark said, sitting back and glancing over at Ivy, who was distracted by trying to solve a puzzle appropriate for her age, "You should find her before your sister notices it and thinks it is a new toy."

Xander let himself in and, walking carefully to not trip over anything in the dark, walked over to Daizi and put the bilby on the desk in front of her. "I brought you something. It's there in front of you," he directed. "I thought you could guess what it is."

"Is it for me to keep or are you just showing off?" Daizi asked curiously, patting around her desk until she found the bilby and picking it up, "Oh, it's heavier than I expected it would be."

"Well, it's something you're showing off, and clearly something you made," Daizi replied, feeling her hands over it, making a face at the ears and general shape, "The ears a bit odd. If I didn't know you were working on a strange Australian animal doorstop, I'd just think you didn't do a very good job at making a cat!"

"Wait until you feel the legs. They are more like a rat's," Xander snickered. "Ba says I did pretty good, though, so I guess it's a recognizable bilby. I'm going to wait until tomorrow to box it up in case I spot any issues with it, and I'll mail it off tomorrow before school."

"Tomorrow is Saturday." Daizi replied with a little laugh, "This is very cool. I know it is a doorstop, but it feels almost like it could be a toy. I hope whatever house this is going to doesn't have dogs, because Enkidu would absolutely destroy this if he found it."

Xander paused and smiled sheepishly. "Monday. I'll be mailing it off Monday. Tomorrow, I'm going to not work. I don't know what I'm gunna do, but it won't be working. I hope they don't have dogs, too. It'd be the worst to find out it got shredded."

"Thanks," Xander said, feeling a glow of pride. Praised by not just one but both parents! He could see why this could get addicting, this desire for attention. It was kind of nice to - once in a while! - get just a taste of it. It felt like getting told you were going the right direction on a very long hike.

"Make sure you put it somewhere safe before you mail it," Daizi told Xander although she didn't doubt he would. Then, a couple hours later, she and Dark had dressed and were waiting for Alec to be ready and for Sally to arrive before they left.

Xander took his prized bilby back to his shed and tucked it away safely. He came back in after making sure everything was put away properly for a couple of days of no work and went to hang out with a book on the couch.

Sally arrived precisely when she said she would, dressed in nice but relaxed clothing, ready for a couple of hours of chasing a toddler around. "Hello, Daizi, darling! And Dark, dear!" she greeted them warmly. "And where is little Ivy?"

Alec came down reluctantly, dressed in his brightest colors and with his makeup more extreme than usual. He was a bright figure... with a gloomy face.

"Hi Sally," Daizi said, hugging her friend hello, "Thanks again for agreeing to watch her. She's just napping right now, she'll probably be up in... what, twenty minutes?" She turned her head towards Dark for confirmation.

"Twenty five at most," Dark said with a nod as he slipped on his shoes, "and she has already had lunch, but if she gets hungry she has a labeled container of snacks in the fridge."

"Understood," Sally nodded to Dark. "I'm sure we'll be just fine playing here and maybe adjourning to the kitchen for snacks, but anything I need to know about?"

Alec slowly slid on his shoes and moved to stand by the door, waiting.

"Do not let her near a phone, she keeps trying to start a ponzi scheme." Dark said dryly as he put on his coat and grabbed Daizi's for her.

"We also think she might be starting to teethe," Daizi added, "She hasn't been too fussy over it most of the time so it shouldn't give you too much trouble. Xander is still here, so if you can't find anything you can ask him. And obviously you can contact us if you have any problems." As she slid into her coat and Dark grabbed his keys, Daizi asked, "Are you ready to go habibi?"

Sally laughed and nodded. "Understood! I wish you safe travels and good success."

Alec nodded and then remembered to answer, "I'm ready, Mama." He pulled on his coat as he went out to the car and slumped down into the seat.
