How Green Becomes Wood

Dark nodded towards Ivy in her high chair, "Watch her turn twelve. And accidentally write twenty instead of thirty when I write the date for the next few years."

"You'll both be 27 by the time this decade is over," Daizi mused, "I think you'll do a lot with these next ten years."

"Twenty-seven." Alec's eyes went huge, and he stared off at nothing, suddenly intimidated by the thought. "Wow. That's so old! So fast."

"I say it's when our lives are really going to get started," Xander replied.

"It's a whole ten years away! And a couple of months! That is a very long time," Alec said.

"At least when you're seventeen, almost, it sounds like a long time," Xander said. "I bet it's going to go by way too fast."

"If I was forty-two, that would only strengthen my point." Daizi replied.

"You do feel very adult at twenty-seven though," Dark pointed out, "It is not until later you realize you were not."

Dark stared at him for a few moments, his heavy eyebrows furrowed, "I have three children, a calendar keeping track of five people's various doctor and dentist appointments, and a spreadsheet of who likes which dinners to use when meal planning. I absolutely feel adult."

"He tries to," Daizi agreed softly, squeezing Dark's hand, "That's why I also take care of him."

"I do not know if I have ever been able to describe myself as 'grooving.'" Dark said flatly.

"You groove with the darkness," Xander replied while Alec snickered. "Like a Monster Mash in a minor key."

"It was the mOnStEr MaSh!" Alec crooned as creepily as he could manage.

"You know, we never actually hear what the monster mash sounds like," Daizi mused, moving so she could rest her cheek on Dark's shoulder, "The entire song is just singing about how they were performing it."

"Good point," Xander agreed and sipped his hot chocolate.

"I like to think that the monster mash is being sung to the tune of the monster mash and that the monster mash is instrumental," Alec said.

"What would you call it, then?" Alec asked.

"Lurking?" Xander suggested.

"Looming?"

"Mood-setting?"

"Setting the drama?"

"Gomezing?"

"Hmm, he is similar to Gomez, but I think he's most like Lurch. With a Gomez penchant for passion and love, but a Lurching quietness and stability."

"Good point. Lurmez. Lurmezing."
