How Green Becomes Wood

"He thinks it's cool, but it's not really his thing," Lex smiled. "He'll be out of the house pretty soon, so this kitty is all mine!" She cackled playfully. Then she sobered at looked Cooger in the eye. She reached up and put her hand on his cheek, her expression soft and tender, devoid of her usual teasing and sarcasm. "I love you, Jasper," she said quietly.

"Right back at you, big fellow," Lex purred, smiling. "You make me really, really happy." She slid her arms up around him and held him close, wanting to kiss him, but also not wanting to cheapen the moment if he wanted talk more.

"Aw!" Lex chuckled, genuinely touched. She reached up and stroked his cheek. "You are so sweet. Sweet, kind, clever, and loyal. I don't think I deserve you, but I'm sure glad I have you!"

Lex sighed forlornly. "It's awful being this darn sexy! So trying. But not as tiring as it is being around you when I know I gotta behave myself and not do the things I want to do to you. Like play with your beard."

A slow, sly smile crossed Lex's face. "Well, now, that is true! I was planning to grab the cat and be on my way, but... I could take a little while longer here." She inched closer and started slowly, very slowly, unbuttoning his shirt. "Besides, I could always use another shirt."

Lex laughed, more than happy to take him up on the offer.

A couple of days later [exact time to be determined], Mr. and Mrs. Sutton were browsing the grocery store's produce section. Mrs. Sutton had a grocery list written out on a piece of paper, each item allocated to its own section to help make a more efficient shopping experience. She pushed the care slowly down the center aisles, taking things off the shelf as she passed them and sending Mr. Sutton to get things that were out of the way or in more awkward corners. They spoke not unkindly to each other, but their tone was very matter-of-fact and businesslike as they walked through the store.

Dark was walking through the store, pushing Ivy in the shopping cart and talked to her about their chores of the day. He didn't always bring her to the grocery store, but with Daizi working and the cold weather meaning they couldn't play outside, it was a good way to stimulate her.

Also, since it was January, the best farmer's markets weren't in operation since local fruits and vegetables weren't producing. Therefore, rather than only going to the store for household essentials like cleaning products and laundry detergent, he was getting the fresh food they'd require. To do so, he was carefully explaining to his daughter how to pick the best ones.

Mr. Sutton was not a particularly tall man, but he could not be classified as short, either. He was that awkward size that was technically average but strangely looked short. He was thin, reasonably muscled in a way that did not look too showy, and had not a brown hair out of place. He was reasonably well-dressed, too, in nice loafers, a white shirt, and dark pants. He could have passed as a business man or an office worker for nearly any company. He noticed Dark first while he was standing near the bananas. He selected the smallest bunch and then went to his wife and nudged her elbow lightly before nodding to Dark.

Mrs. Sutton was almost exactly the same height as her husband. Her bobbed hair had a slight poof to it in a 50s style that was not too over the top and gave her a tiny bit more height than her sensible heels. Her calf-length skirt, blue blouse, and white sweater leaned a bit more to the 50s vibe, and when she looked up, her eyes narrowed for a moment, calculating as she considered. Then she gave her husband a nod and turned the cart.

Mr. Sutton strolled up to Dark. "Excuse me, but did you use to teach history at the high school?" he asked politely with a professional smile.
