How Green Becomes Wood

"Have a nice evening, Sally," Daizi said before hanging up and snuggling in with her husband. Dark wasn't exactly thrilled about the idea of the double date, but he liked to make his wife happy and was, for that reason, content enough to go along with it.

Alec came down the stairs, calling as he did so, "Baaaaaaaaa! History is too hard! Who gave these rulers permission to name themselves all the same thing or super similar?"

Dark turned his head to look in that direction while Daizi frowned slightly and pressed her face against his chest--- this was meant to be her cuddle time!

"It is tradition, often," He answered, "Is that what you are struggling with or do you need other help?"

Alec held up his history book and his notebook. "I have to be able to remember which king Philip did what when, and there's at least fourteen Philips! And don't get me started on Caesars. How are you supposed to remember them all?"

Dark looked at Alec and then after a moment asked, "Your teacher is just making you recall all of the various Philips? Philip of Macedon, King Philip II of Spain, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh...? Just all at once? I do not understand, it is easier to recall them if you are working by era and location, but really it does not make sense to me your teacher is forcing you to be bogged down in the minutiae. I do not understand how you will understand context if you are juggling generations."

Alec waved his notebook in the air. "Exactly! How does any of this make sense?" He huffed and turned away. "I'm going to make a timeline chart. Thats the only solution." He mini-stomped away. "Never bathing my foot. He had more bathtubs than he had bedrooms!"

"What is your unit even called?" Dark asked, confused. He had a master's degree in history and had never encountered a class with that structure before. It didn't seem like it would help students actually learn the important lessons of history.

"I don't remember. Something about just learning the kings," Alec said. "It was supposed to be about familiarity for the people before we go into learning about the era or whatever. I dunno."

"It's a list," Alec grumbled. "Here's the different rulers of the different areas, in order, and we're supposed to be able to tie the what and the where to the who instead of the other way around."

Dark nodded, scratching his beard while Daizi still lay on top of him, wondering how long this conversation would go on for. "It is not how I would teach it," he said at last, "but I suppose some historians are more attached to the 'Great Man' theory than I am. I only hope you make it futher in history than this by the end of the year."

Alec grumbled his way upstairs to finish his history homework.

About half an hour later, the doorbell rang. Ciara stood on the porch, a large bag in hand, looking as prim and pristine as always.

When the doorbell rang, Daizi sighed and pushed herself off of her husband, and went to open the door, "Hello? Can I help you?" She was dressed like herself, meaning her clothes were flowing and free, but she was also working from home with a toddler, so her hair wasn't styled, just loosely clipped back, and she definitely didn't look as put together as she did when she was planning to meet someone.

"Good evening, Daizi," Ciara greeted her. "It is Ciara. I apologize for stopping by unannounced, but I was in the neighborhood and had something I needed to give Alec and Xander. It was rather last minute."

"No, don't apologize!" Daizi replied, her expression brightening considerably, "Please, come in! You're always welcome here!" She stepped to the side, holding the door open for her. "Goose, Ciara is here! I'll go get the twins, they'll be delighted to see you."

Dark came up, carrying Ivy so she didn't get into trouble with no eyes on her, "Hello, Ciara. I did not expect to see you today."

Ciara stepped in gingerly but stayed in the entryway, not wanting to have to remove her shoes. "Good evening, Mr. Dark," she greeted, inclining her head slightly. "I had not expected to come today. I apologize for interrupting your evening."
