How Green Becomes Wood

"It could be fun," Sloan said, looking down at her nails, "Do we also have nail polish remover? I don't mind my nails looking a little bit busted, but I don't want to leave nail polish on my skin."

"Yep! It's right here," Alec said, pulling it from nowhere.

"I'm pretty sure we've all voted in favor of Catch Phrase first, anyway," Xander said, eying the set uneasily. There were a lot of bright colors.

"So, who wants to play this polish game with me?" Alec asked.

Becky instantly raised her hand. Emma hesitated before reluctantly raising her own, eying the nail polish remover.

Peter shrugged. "Oh, why not? I'll give it a go!"

"I may as well get my nails done," Sloan shrugged, "I probably won't keep it for long, but it's fine to look silly for a bit." It wasn't really her thing, but she supposed most of the boys at the party wouldn't agree, and it didn't look like it'd be fun with only four people, "After this I gotta do something on Xander's side, though, Alec's been getting all my attention."

Milo shuffled over to Xander's side, because even though he didn't have anything against boys in nail polish explicitly... He was picked on enough as it was.

"Awesome!" Alec cheered. "This'll be fun! I'll start, and then we can go around in a circle."

"Nice to have you, Stitch," Xander told him as he found the Chatch Phrase device and powered it up. "You might want to keep an eye on my parents. They said they'd get tatts done, and you'll want to get a picture of those."

Austin glanced toward Dark, wondering if a new tattoo, even glitter, would be discernable.

"Sounds great," Sloan said, content to just sit back and enjoy the game however it came.

"I've been watching," Milo replied, "but I figured they'd come and show you when they're finished."

Becky lucked out and got a decent color palette of a rosey red twice, two neutral tans, a coral red, a light pinky color with a light glitter three times, and a sagey green twice. Six colors was still a wild combination, but at least they more or less went together. She was rather delighted and proclaimed she was going to wear it to school.

Peter got the coral red three times in a row and complained jokingly that it was weighted. Then he got a glittery dark walnut color and remarked that he actually rather liked it, even if he'd never wear it on a regular school day. Then he got a sparkly purple twice, a pastel pink, and three sage greens. It wasn't the prettiest combination, but he accepted it with grace.

Alec got the dark walnut color twice, the glitter pink, three cobalt blues, a very nice lavender twice, and a rather unfortunate shade of green. He laughed and promised to wear them at least one day at school.

Emma's first choice got her a very nice, subdued shade of pink, and she almost sighed in relief. Then she got the same unfortunate shade of green as Alec, a bright silver glitter, sunshine yellow, glittery bright blue, glitter magenta, vibrant red, sparkly purple, spring lavender, glitter green, and two pumpkin oranges. She put on a brave face, but it was pretty clear she was horrified, and there were no promises to keep it. At all.

"How did you manage to only get one repeating color?" Alec asked in shock as he helped her clean up her last finger polish.

"I don't know," Emma said a little stiffly.

When Sloan spun, she ended up with... an absurd number of sage green. Six of her nails: sage green. Two of the remaining were the lavender colour, which she put on her middle fingers, and the remaining two were glittery walnut, so it seemed like she would've ended up with a perfectly lovely, normal manicure, except she also kept landing on the card which made her paint them with her eyes closed, so almost half of her nails looked like Ivy had painted them. "I think Emma managed to steal all the randomness in my spins," She laughed.

"I think so, but it looks pretty good!" Peter grinned. He held up his fingers. "Meanwhile, I look like I did mine with my eyes closed, and I didn't land on it once!"

"I'll help you clean them up," Becky giggled, scooting over to him. "Are you going to wear them like this to school?"

"Maybe, if my mother doesn't put her foot down," Peter laughed.

"Does she not like painted nails on boys?" Emma asked.

"No, she doesn't like more than two colors painted on anyone's nails," he grinned.

"My mom will lose her mind when she sees these, and they aren't even that bad," Sloan said, looking down at them, "At least, they won't be once they're cleaned up. But my mom always has s*** to say. I swear it doesn't matter what I put on, it's always inappropriate, it's like she wants me to live my life in sad beige."

"I think beige is a very nice color, and you really shouldn't talk so poorly about your mother, who is just trying to look out for you," Emma said primly as she reached for the bottle of nail polish remover.

Alec froze. He glanced between Sloan and Emma. He looked at Sloan, eyes wide and pleading. Please, don't rise to the bait! Please don't!

"Mothers are generally just trying to look out for us, sure, but it can be hard when you're a kid," Peter said before Sloan could say anything. "It's nice to be able to vent sometimes." He waved his hand lightly. "I think I'm going to go watch the others play Catch Phrase while my polish dries."

"I'll come with you!" Becky agreed, scrambling to her feet. "Slo, you want to come?"

Sloan watched Emma carefully, saying nothing. She was just a year older, maybe two years, but it seemed like such an immature comment to make. Then again, anyone who was so afraid of seeming childish struck her as immature. With one hand she fiddled with her earring and glanced over at Alec. Seeing his face, she shrugged lightly and got up and said, "Beige is really cute if it suits you, but it's not really my thing." Then she said, "Yeah, I promised after I finished this game I'd go and hang out with Xander."

She started to walk off, then paused, glancing back at Alec, "It looks like your dad is still in that face painting chair."

"What, seriously? Still?" Alec asked, turning to look. "I have to go see what they are up to! And show off my new nails." He stood and walked over to see what was happening in the face painting chair.

Becky looped her through Sloan's. "You can come to mine sometime and tell me all about it," she said quietly. "I mean, I love my mom, and I think we get on better than you do with yours, but sometimes... ugh. And beige is super bland."

Xander looked up as they approached. "What's up?"

Dark was sitting there with one sleeve rolled up to his elbow, watching as the artist quite joyfully was undertaking the task of glittering his extant tattoos.

"Thanks," Sloan replied, "I don't hate my mom, she's just like... Super controlling. You wouldn't believe the half of it." She held out her hand to Xander, "These are my very cool, very chic, randomly generated nails."

"What is happening?" Alec laughed, watching them. "Ba, you look fantastic, but what are you doing?"

Xander studied her nails. "That's a lot of green. Not too bad."

Becky grinned and showed him her nails. "I have to say, we are going to be striking!"

Xander raised a brow at her nails and then looked at Peter's. "Wow. Emma agreed to this?"

Dark glanced dimly at Alec, "You were not meant to see it yet."

"She made a joke about how she can glitter existing tattoos," Daizi explained, a blue and purple goose on her cheek, grinning, "Your father said he was perfectly alright, but I pointed out it'd probably make you happy. We compromised and are only doing one forearm."

"Yeah, I don't know if I'm lucky or not," Sloan said, looking at her own nails, "She did agree, but I think she's already removing them."

"Mama, that goose is so beautiful on you!" Alec grinned. "Sorry, Ba, I'll pretend I didn't see anything at all!" He turned away and added, "I'll pretend I didn't see a totally awesome bit of artwork."

"Her's were so wild!" Becky giggled and told him all the colors.

"Man, I wish you'd have gotten a picture of those," Xander told Milo. "Looking forward to seeing Alec's. So, are you guys going to join us?"

"Sure, if there's room," Peter agreed.

"Thank you, I love it," Daizi grinned, "Dark tells me he got a spider, it's very sappy."

"Honestly, they were awesome," Sloan said, sitting down with them, "I mean, absolutely wild and ridiculous, but that's the fun of it, right? And yeah, I'll play, if it's not going to throw anything off."

"I wouldn't expect anything different," Alec assured her. "I'll be back later to see what you totally aren't doing right now." He trotted off, intending to return to Emma, but got sidetracked when Becky waved to him.

"We should all play! It's more fun with more players," Becky said.

"Yeah, should be good," Xander said, checking with Milo and Austin first. "We can start over. We hadn't gotten very far into this round, anyway."

Peter plunked himself down next to Becky and Milo. "Bring it on!"
