How Green Becomes Wood

"I should get back to work," Lex said with a mirroring sigh. "Get gone with you, sir, and look after those kittens. Next time I see you, you'd better have that one's sister."

Soup had settled down on the table and sat staring at them unabashedly.

"I will, and I'll have the paperwork too," Cooger promised, "Have a nice night, Lex. Love ya." He bent to kiss her cheek, then he scratched Soup underneath the chin before heading out and going home.

Unfortunately for her parents, Ivy was awake and cranky for a good portion of the night, but there wasn't much they could do about it. In the morning, Dark and Daizi were both exhausted, but they had managed to make Ivy sunny once more. And more than willing to handle the conversation until her brothers went to school, while her parents tried desperately to wake up a little.

Alec lifted Ivy up high and kissed her forehead. "Be good while we're gone! Well play when we get home," he told her.

"Come on, we'll be late if you don't get a move on," Xander told him. "Bye, Mini. Bye, parentals. See you later."

"Bye, Mama! Bye, Ba!" Alec called as they headed out the door.

Since it was just a normal Monday in February, school went on as normal. Milo snuck his way over to Xander to say hello and Sloan stopped by to say hello before going over to talk with Claire.

"Come over whenever you are free. I can't wait to introduce you to Black Lily!" Alec paused and frowned. "Hmm. No. Closer, but no. Do you want to see pictures? Would she like to see pictures? I need to thank her for the cup, too."

Alec blushed as he walked alongside Sloan. "Oh, sure, I know that. You were just on your way first. I didn't want to interrupt."

Xander looked up at Milo. "So. Have you figured out what you want? For your birthday?"

"Thanks!" Alec chirped. "And thank you so much for the mug. It's adorable. My uncle saw it, and is completely jealous."

Xander nodded. "Since yesterday." He picked out a bit of cucumber and crunched on it. "Cake? Pie? Dinner for dessert, and desert for dinner?"

"You're so welcome, I'm glad you like it!" Claire said, "I hope you don't mind I didn't just give you the snail mug, someone actually bought it, if you believe that! It's flattering to know your Uncle was jealous of it," She ducked her head shyly.

"I don't know," Milo shrugged, "Didn't really think much about it."

"That's okay. I love the cat one so much. I should commission one for my uncle," Alec grinned. "Oh! Did Sloan tell you? I got a kitten for my birthday! Do you want to see?" He was already pulling out his phone.

"Got any strong feelings one way or another?" Xander asked.

"Oh my goodness, no way!" Claire said excitedly, "Yes let me see her!" Upon seeing the picture, she squealed, covering her face, "She is SO cute! Oh my gosh she looks like Toothless!!!"

"... No?" Milo asked, squinting, "You're acting like my birthday is next week."

"She does?" Alec turned the phone around to look. "Huh. She does! Maybe I should name her Astrid."

Xander raised his brows at Milo. "With how hard it can be to get you to tell me anything you want because you never want to inconvenience anyone, I figure if I keep asking, I'll eventually annoy you into giving me an answer."
