How Green Becomes Wood

"Then let's watch the sunset for a while," Xander said quietly. "I don't have anywhere I gotta be." He started the van and let it run for a bit to warm them up and got some music going. He didn't leave it running for long, soon turning it off, but the music kept playing soft and quiet.

"You'd probably have driven around until either you got yourself lost or ran out of gas," Xander remarked. He watched the horizon as lights winked on, slowly becoming clearer.

"True," Xander grinned. "You don't mess with people with f***ed up faces, either. At least it's not multiple colors anymore. Those were some seriously impressive shades you had going on."

"It's healing faster than I thought it would. They said I'll be able to get the stiches out in about ten days, so it's not..." She scratched her cheek, "It's not the worst injury I've had, that's for sure."

"I've had a concussion, that wasn't fun. I've broken my ulna before, but it was just a fracture and didn't require surgery. I've sprained a knee and both my wrists before. I'm going to have really messed up wrists when I'm old. Once, I thought I genuinely broke a vertebrae when I landed bad, but thankfully I just bruised it and it healed fine." Sloan answered. "You?"

"I think I've had a couple of concussions, but I didn't know what they were until later," Xander mused. "Had a weird accident doing stupid stuff, and I got a nasty cut down my front and back that scarred and look really weird. Couple of bruised ribs, I think one was broken once. Lost a tooth. Broke a toe on someone's shin. Kind of got beat up for that, but it was worth it." He shrugged. "They kind of blue together after a while. Physical damage doesn't hurt as much as emotional damage." He paused and raised his eyebrows, impressed at that. "Damn, that's deep. I should write that down."

"Oh, I forgot about the broken toes," Sloan said, tipping her head back, "I'm pretty sure my pinky toes are just a single mass of bone at this point. And I used to have a razor scooter, you ever have a razor scooter?" She glanced at him, "That is a pretty good line, but I'm not going to talk about worst emotional hurts. I'll look like an asshole."
