How Green Becomes Wood

Xander snorted at Daizi's careful words, amused, and then winced. "Still a stupid way to go down."

Alec noticed Enkidu and moved out of the way so the dog could come forward if he wanted. "I guess you could say you got it jumping on the trampoline. Or at Judo. Or kicking a criminal. Or ice skating."

Xander looked at him, bewildered. "Ice skating? At this time of the year?"

Alec just shrugged.

"There are indoor rinks," Dark pointed out.

"You can say you got it stopping someone from stealing your dog or your sister," Daizi suggested, "And you had been wanting to quit anyway, so this isn't really what took you down."

"Perfect. Little sister. I'll take that route," Xander agreed with a nod. "I'll call them in a minute and let them know I can't come."

"Shouldn't he get pain meds or something? Maybe for the swelling?" Alec asked Dark.

"I'll go!" Alec said and quickly scampered off to do so.

"This is a lot of fuss over a twisted ankle," Xander sighed. "I'll be fine!"

Alec soon returned with the pills and counted them out very carefully before handing them and a bit of water to Xander.

"Alright. Thanks, Ba," Xander said, giving him a vague salute. He tried to hold out the rabbit to Ivy. "Mini. Do you want your bunny back?"

"I can get our homework set up down here," Alec suggested. "And then do you want a book or something?"

"Sure," Xander agreed.

Ivy made no move to try to take it back from him, although eventually she probably would. Empathy was very new for her, she had only just managed to come to the conclusion that other people feel badly sometimes, and therefore (she believed) what made her feel better must also make them feel better. So he could hug her favourite stuffed animal for now, she was okay being held by her Mama.

"If you're doing your homework, I'll take her somewhere else so she won't distract you," Daizi offered, standing up with Ivy.

Alec got Xander set up with pillows and props, much to his begrudgement, and then sat beside him with their homework. It didn't take them long, though it did take a bit longer with Xander trying to work from an unfamiliar position. Plus, the rabbit had to be involved, too, which both twins treat with grave importance.

Daizi took Ivy upstairs and, after picking out their books, settled into the rocking chair to read to her. Dark, meanwhile, sat in his shed, working on his various projects. Both adults felt some lingering concern for their son, but he seemed to be handling the pain well, and since they had already made the plan to take him to the doctor if it worsened, there didn't seem too much point in running around fretting.

Eventually, Dark came back inside to get started on dinner, stopping in at the living room briefly. At first he was going to just see if Xander needed anything, but then something occurred to him, "Can you do stairs?"

"Sure," Xander said instantly and without hesitation. "It's not that big of a deal."

Alec glanced at him and raised an eyebrow before going back to organizing his homework and filing it away in his bag again.

"Need help?" Xander asked automatically.

Alec pushed him back down gently. "I got this. What's for dinner, Ba?" He got up and followed his father to the kitchen while Xander pouted.
