How Green Becomes Wood

"Daizi would believe you owe her even less than you owe me," Dark said to nobody while her watched Ciara go inside. Of all of the women he knew, she was definitely the most capable of defending herself, but he still needed to make sure. Then, he took a deep breath, and thinking of happier things turned homewards.

Ciara was happy to get out of her costume and let her hair down. It had been moderately fun to dress up, a childishly enjoyable event, but now it was time to go back to reality. She preferred reality. Soon, she was in her most comfortable nightgown and fluffy robe, resting quietly in her living room with a cup of tea and a British cooking show.

At home, the twins were up and waiting for Dark, though Alec had dozed off and was leaning against Xander as he snoozed. Xander was reading a book, though he kept rereading the same few paragraphs.

When Dark returned home, Daizi was also waiting up for him. She was unable to recall an evening where he was out without her that she hadn't stayed up to make sure he came home safe, or at least tried to stay up. She had one earbud in and was listening to an audiobook, dressed simply in one of his shirts, her pajama shorts, and a pair of ridiculous fuzzy socks. Ivy, of course, had long since gone to bed.

Entering quietly, Dark slipped out of his shoes and touched the salt, heading right to the living room where he guessed, by the smell of incense, he would find his wife.

"What are you both doing up?" Dark asked, pulling the coffee table aside as he entered the room, "You have school tomorrow, it is late."

"Welcome home, Goose," Daizi smiled up at him, switching off her audiobook and setting it aside.

Xander rolled his eyes. "As if we ever take hints when they aren't specified to be hints. Goodnight, you two."

"Don't stay up too late!" Alec laughed. He helped Xander down the stairs to his room and then went up to his own room, closing the door firmly.

"Yet you whine and moan if we are at all affectionate in front of you," Dark grumbled while his sons fled. Then, turning back to Daizi, lifted her right off the couch and, supporting her with one arm, kissed her deeply and brought her into the space he had cleared.

Laughing and wrapping her arms around his neck Daizi asked, "What's gotten into your Goose?"

"I have danced with a hundred different women tonight," He told her, their faces close as he gently set her down like she was a moth landing on a flower's petal, "But I really, really would like to dance with you."

The twins stayed in their rooms, thought Alec sat on the floor near his door to listen for a little while. Xander didn't think much of it, happy to go to bed and sleep. Alec wanted to hear the sounds of happy, genuine affection for just a little while. He was careful not to stay too long, not wanting to hear anything he didn't want to know about, but despite his fluster and fussing, he liked hearing and seeing Dark and Daizi's love for each other.

Melting into his arms, Daizi danced with her husband, the scent of his cologne enveloping her. Unlike with every other woman that evening, Dark kept her close and let his hands wander down his back. They whispered sweetly to each other, and only their mingled laughter was loud enough to drift upstairs. After a song or two, they brought themselves to bed.

The next morning, the twins were both up early and at the breakfast table. Alec followed Dark, not saying a word, just waiting eagerly and impatiently for further explanation of the previous night. Xander would have done the same, but he was staying off his foot. He stared whenever Dark was in sight, waiting with the same intense eagerness. What had happened??
