How Green Becomes Wood

Dark shook his head, still gently running his fingers through Ivy's hair, "If you had started at A, I would be tempted to tell you to plan dates alphabetically. I suppose you could skip C and go straight to D, to claim you intentionally skipped your initials."

"I guess we could skip H, too," Alec mused. "But what about Claire's initials?" He frowned thoughtfully. "I don't know her middle name. I should ask. Anyway! It's too late for that because we're going to the park to search for Newts." He sighed happily and squeezed his new bear. "It's a lovely time to be alive."

"Are they amphibians? Huh. Well, at school, I heard someone talking about a scavenger hunt with newts. You go and find little statues of newts following newt clues," Alec grinned. "It sounded cool and unique and like something she might enjoy."

Alec nodded bashfully. "Yeah. I really, really like her. In fact, I'd say I'm head over heels for her. I've had a crush on her for the longest time." He sighed sappily. "The longest time! And now, we finally get to spend time together, and she's not just an ethereal angel at a distance. She's an angel who holds my hand and tells me how to make Fruity Pebbles boba!"

"I am very glad for you," Dark told him, a distant wistful look coming into his eyes, "It is really special to get to spend time with someone who means that to you. I should warn you against putting her on a pedestal, but there are just some things we must do until we are proved right or wrong."

"I know she's not perfect, theoretically, but I'm okay with finding out what flaws she might have, because that's more about her." Alec sighed again and flopped back, staring at the ceiling. "I sound like you, don't I? Oh well. Far worse things to turn into than your father!"

Dark watched Alec, who did, admittedly, remind him a bit of himself. He was more dreamlike, and more willing to hope, but the way this girl had fully knocked Alec to the floor...? Daizi had done that to him. She still did that to him. Most high school relationships didn't last, Dark knew, and technically, technically, his hadn't. They were broken up for five miserable years before they got together, and he did think they wouldn't have worked had they not had those years apart... But she still was his highschool sweetheart, was she not? He was reclining on their couch with their little girl sleeping on his chest and currently dreading how it was destroying her precious sleep schedule. So Dark just couldn't bring himself to give that warning to look before leaping.

And anyway, he first needed to coolly remind Alec, "It depends on your father," To him, there was nothing worse. It was a mercy Alec didn't harbor that same unshakable fear, "but I suppose you do sound a tiny bit like me."

Alec grinned at Dark. "I'd much rather be like my real father than the other guy, that's for sure! I don't think I have the gravitas to literally sound like you, unfortunately. That would be amazing. Do you think I can pull off your vocabulary? Or do I need more gravitas for that?"

Even still Alec didn't understand, and that was the true gift, "I do believe if you want to sound like me you would need to increase your vocabulary at least far enough to not use gravitas in two nearly back-to-back sentences," he very lightly teased, "but it takes a significant amount of boring books to sound like me."

Alec understood. He fully understood. He had never met his biological father until relatively recently, and what he did know, he hated. He absolutely did not want to be like his bio father. Dark was his real father, and someone he wanted to be like, in his own way. He just smiled at Dark. "I like the word 'gravitas!' But what would you say instead? And what boring books should I use?"

"I would probably say presence, or perhaps use a few extra words to express how a person may command attention," Dark said, but didn't like to think up synonyms to praise he felt he was receiving, "Any from my part of our bookshelves, I suppose. The English language section is likely easier."

"Alright, then I hope I can someday command the amount of presence necessary in order to command the right amount of gravitas to use the words of the boring books," Alec said. He stretched and stood. "I'm going to go put Berry Bandtastic Bashir in my room."

"See you for dinner, Ba!" Alec chirped. He headed upstairs and put his bear away on his bed. He stayed in his room, humming to himself and reliving his favorite parts over and over again. It had been a wonderful day!

Xander was in his room, too, reading a book on Chincoteague ponies. It was a peaceful time for him.

Soon enough, Daizi called everyone to dinner while setting the table. Dark, meanwhile, undertook the arduous task of gently waking Ivy. He had allowed her twenty minutes of rest, but it was ultimately for her own good to not sleep too deeply at this time of day. Anyway, she needed dinner, he thought.

Thankfully, she didn't start crying, but she did sit in his lap, bleary-eyed and confused, like she wasn't sure of the time or what she was meant to be doing.
