Although a bit more at ease, Daizi was still upset, and it was visible even in the way she was standing, although her sunglasses disguised the rage and distress in her eyes. Amongst the things she hated about this meeting was how she wanted to cry when she was really angry. It just made her look emotional and illogical to those who may want to discredit her.

"Yes, I would like to know," Dark answered Ciara, rubbing his thumb against his wife's arm to hopefully soothe her.
 
"She has a grandfather who fought in World War Two on the side of the Nazis, and her family has never fully lost those ties. She, herself, has no direct ties at all, and has, in fact, gone on record several times to condemn such ideals, but a second cousin is in with the NeoNazi party. It is not much, but it would be a shock if it came out."

This, admittedly, was a big enough fact to distract Daizi from her seething rage, and both she and her husband stood still, facing Ciara. "That's..." Daizi began, but couldn't quite find a suitable response.

"It explains some things," Dark said grimly.
 
Ciara held up a finger. "I would like to remind you that there is no evidence that she personally endorses those particular views. Hers is a different brand of xenophobia, but it would be socially dating if it got out."
 
"I only mean," Dark explained carefully, "it is understandable a person who may have been brought up in a xenophobic household grows to maintain some level of xenophobia, even if it is towards a different group."
 
"In that, we are in agreement," Ciara said placidly. "If you have need of anything, please feel free to contact me as this continues, though I am sure you can handle this very well in your own way."
 
"Thank you," Dark told her, "You were a great help."

"We probably would still have been arguing if you had not come," Daizi admittedly bitterly, although she wasn't bitter towards Ciara, "She didn't want to listen to us."
 
"It is difficult to face the fact that you may be deeply and disturbingly wrong about something you believe so strongly," Ciara said. "It is unfortunate, but most changes like that must come about through something... drastic."
 
Dark and Daizi said goodbye to Ciara and then went together to the car, quietly. There was still tension between them, even though Daizi wasn't actually upset with him, and he definitely wasn't upset with her. As they drove home, Dark started to suggest what the next steps to take were, but Daizi stopped him, not wanting to talk about it, and they fell back into silence, each locked into their own separate thoughts.

Finally, with her head resting against the window, Daizi asked, "What if it had been Ivy? If she was older, if she was in that class?"

"I do not know." Dark admitted, after a protracted silence. They both knew one day they would need an answer. They both knew they wouldn't be ready.
 
The twins were waiting at home with Ivy, playing little games with her and keeping themselves distracted. Well, Xander was using Ivy to keep Alec distracted while they waited. Alec was worried about their parents. Worried about what they'd face. Worried about the fallout.
 
Stepping inside the house, Daizi touched the salt for a long while before slipping out of her shoes and kneeling down at the front door to pet her dog, but it was only for a moment because as soon as that front door opened, Ivy looked up from her playtime, saw her parents, and with so much genuine, unfiltered, loving joy in her voice cried out, "Mama! Baba!" and ran as best as she could to them, her arms raised above her head well before she actually made it to them.

So, Daizi stopped petting Enkidu and lifted Ivy up, peppering her with kisses and feeling like she wanted to cry all over again. Today was terrible, but it was the future that scared her most of all. Seeing the look on her face, Dark stopped and rubbed Daizi on the back, then slipped out of his own shoes and went into the kitchen to make tea.
