How Green Becomes Wood

"Wow. Your mom must be desperate," Xander said. "Sounds like you and Claire are going to have fun."

"New or thrifted?" Alec demanded, leaning over to talk. "I know a great store that has vintage dress for cheap! Well, cheaper than new."

"Aw, man!" Xander groaned, remembering now.

"That sounds amazing!" Alec grinned. "Thanks, Sloan! I know this is for you, but I won't deny that I will be having a grand time."

"I'm sure you will," Xander groaned, rubbing his brows. "Alright. A promise is a promise. When's this happening?"

"I want to come too!" Claire chimed in.

"Of course you're coming, you're my date," Sloan told her, "And we need to do it pretty quickly, so whenever you're both available, I guess. I can move my schedule around because I do actually want a good dress."

Alec's smile grew even broader when he heard Claire wanted to come. "I'm good whenever. But I insist we visit at least one thrift store before we go buy new, okay?"

Xander rolled his eyes and named a few times that would work for them both. "Any of those good?"

"We can go to a thrift store but I'll be so for real Alec I'm short with big hips and do not have time for alterations," Sloan pointed out, and, admittedly, just wanted the experience of buying a brand new dress. She thrifted and upcycled a lot of her clothes, much to her mother's chagrin, she wanted a new dress, especially since she managed to swing it that her mother wasn't going to pick it. Then she named the nearest time available.

"Totally fair, but you never know!" Alec said brightly.

Xander did not understand the desire to spend so much money on a dress that would only be worn once, but he resolved not to be a complete downer. "Alright, sounds good. Are we carpooling, or driving separately?"

"We can carpool, Claire just has to come over," Sloan said. She nearly suggested Claire meet up with them, but decided to be kind to both of her friends who were crazy about each other.

"Yeah, I can do that," Claire said, "Since I'm only a junior going, I'm just rewearing my homecoming dress."

"Are you and Sloan really going together?" Alec asked. Why was he feeling a weird twinge of jealousy? He firmly told the twinge to mind its own business. They were just friends. Even if they weren't, it wasn't any business of his. He and Claire had never actually made anything official.

"Sounds good. I'll be the driver. I'll be better at that than judging dresses," Xander remarked.

"Yeah," Claire replied happily, "It's going to be a total blast, I'm looking forwards to it!"

"I don't have a date-date, so she's my plus one," Sloan explained, "Rumy will there too, with her friend, but Claire's my girl."

"We're going to take those cheesy prom pictures together!"

Alec felt a sense of relief that it wasn't a date-date. He knew he was being silly, but he couldn't help it. He decided to ignore it for now. "That sounds fantastic! I want to see the pictures. You'll be so cute!"

"All right, all right, you'll have plenty of time to talk later," Xander said, reclaiming his phone from Alec. "I gotta get back to my weights."

"Oh, I'm despondent," Sloan said with mocking tearfullness, "I can't believe it happened." Again, Claire laughed, and then they both said goodbye before hanging up.
