How Green Becomes Wood

"For me it's like... Spores. I get this mental image of mushrooms growing in my lungs if I breathe near a living fungus," Claire admitted a bit sheepishly, "How does she make it advantageous for her?"

"If she already likes you, just be yourself," Sloan advised him, "It sounds like really stupid, basic advice, but I'm being for real. She likes you, so be you."

Xander considered this fact and nodded. "Makes sense. She has me lift rocks so that she can find all the bugs underneath, and she likes to show me the various insects she's found throughout the day. Ba's not hugely happy since he once found her pockets stuffed with worms."

"I'll do my best," Alec promised. He smiled to himself giddily. She really liked him! He hurried down the aisle to catch up to Xander and Claire.

Laughing, Claire said, "Kids are so weird."

Sloan followed after Alec, and once they arrived there Claire turned and then exclaimed, "Oh no, my pick is also blue! I hope it's not the same one!"

"If it is, I think I'll have to choose it," Sloan replied, "The twenty minutes is probably up now, though."

"Mines' blue, too," Xander remarked, holding up enough fabric to reveal a purpley-blue sheen. "Looks like it's a blue day."

"I thought you weren't allowed anymore," Alec said suspiciously.

"I can still offer, can't I?" Xander said with a sniff.

"Xander, your dress first," Alec said, hoping to get the worst over first.

"Okay," Xander said and handed Sloan his dress choice. It was the best dress he'd picked out so far, but that wasn't saying much. It was a light chiffon fabric, and very, very red, and very flowy. The massive sleeves could be removed, worn up, or worn off the shoulder, and the full-length skirt had a slit that was not immediately apparent.

Sloan had some doubts about the dress, but went to change into it anyway. After a few moments, she called Claire into the stall for help with the lacing in the back.

After this, there was a prolonged moment of silence, before Sloan burst forth exclaiming, "I need a sword!"

Alec burst out laughing. "You do! You need a magnificent sword!"

Xander nodded, surprised the dress looked as good as it did, but oddly pleased. "What about a wicked staff and a book of pyromancy?" he suggested. "You could cast spells, or clonk people with the staff."

"Sword!" Alec declared. "I want a picture of this. May I?"

"White," Xander told Claire.

Alec quickly took several pictures of Sloan. "You look amazing! I don't know if it's prom, but I love it!"

"You make it look really cool," Xander agreed. "A flaming sword would be perfect."

"Agreed. What color would you want if it were for you?" Alec asked. He snapped a few more pictures of Sloan.

"I bet it'll go on sale after prom," Xander remarked to Sloan. "You could get it just for fun then."

Thinking about this as she went into the dressing room to help Sloan undo the lacing, she said, "A pastel blue might be nice. Oh, or a lavender, because then I'd feel like Lady Amalthea!"

"Honestly, I might," Sloan replied, "And then we'll all go to a Ren Faire together."

"Lavender would look so gorgeous on you! And I'd love to go to a Ren Faire as a group," Alec agreed happily.

"Sounds like fun," Xander agreed. "I call bard."

Alec paused and stared at him. "Really? Bard?"

"Edgy bard," Xander confirmed.

"I figured Alec would be the bard and you'd be a knight or something," Sloan said, changing into the blue halter dress, "I'm wondering if I could get leather bracers over this dress."

"I don't know what I'd be," Claire asked, waiting in the dressing room while Sloan changed since she wasn't going to sneak back out.

"Girl you literally made a jester outfit and forced all of us into a group costume last Halloween," Sloan pointed out.

"I could be a knight, but I'm terrible at working with others," Xander pointed out. "How about a rogue knight?"

"That could work," Alec agreed. "That jester outfit and the group costume was amazing! You could be a jester, Claire, and I'll be your minstrel."
