"A very good idea," Alec agreed. He glanced at Xander and Claire once Sloan was gone again. "What do you say we pick out an accessory to give as a gift?" he whispered.
"Not even one," Alec agreed with Claire. "Just something simple and nice that will go with her dress, and we can all pitch in as a gift from all of us for her special evening." He glanced at Claire. "If that's okay with you? It's my spontaneous idea, so I totally understand if you weren't prepared for or even want to..."
"No, it's okay," Claire said, "Between the three of us it won't be that expensive, and anyway I doubt we'd pick something that's like... three hundred dollars. But, uh, she's not going to be changing for that long, so how do you propose we find something without her knowing?"
"Xander, since your choosing power has been nerfed, you get to play distraction," Alec told him. "Find something, anything, to keep her occupied. Maybe even take her out of the store. Claire, you and I will make some fast choices. Sound good?"
Claire hurried after him, feeling incredibly mischevious and sly. It wasn't too often that she misled a friend for something, so this was an exciting turn of events!
Sloan stepped out, back in her usual clothes with her chosen dress over her arm. After looking around she asked, "Where did they run off to?"
Alec ducked down a little to make sure he couldn't be seen over the dresses, grinning as he started looking over the offerings. "What do you think?" he whispered covertly to Claire, leaning in close to her.
Xander shrugged. "Shiny things," he said dryly. "Supposedly. I'm choosing to believe they are only looking at the shiny things. Claire has a reasonably good sense of direction, right?"
Leaning in, even though she didn't really need to duck, Claire said, "That one is a little delicate for her, and I think she'd say that one is like a grandmother's. These two are nice though!"
Sloan shook her head, "They're like magpies. Thankfully, yes, Claire doesn't get lost everywhere. She just can't see over things." This was said as if Sloan wasn't barely average height for a woman.
Alec found her snort adorable, but he could tell she seemed embarrassed by it, so he said nothing. Instead, he smirked and said, "I kind of want to pick one out for Xander's sake, because it is pretty by itself, but do you think Sloan would actually like it? Maybe just one of these more simple chain-types?"
Xander shrugged. "It was kind of fun. Still not my thing, but not the torture I expected it to be. And never let it be said that Xander Wahid-Dark doesn't keep his promises!"
"I don't think just a chain is her thing," Claire replied, "Unless it's one of those that have diamonds in it? But with her neckline, something that dangles a bit would be really pretty I think."
"I'm glad it wasn't torture," Sloan grinned, "I had a lot of fun, even though some of your choices were bonkers. Please tell me you didn't actually like the yellow one and the Liberace one."
"Agreed," Alec said. "How about... this one? It has a long extra dangling chain. Kind of makes the necklace look like a Y to me. Or one of the two you picked were really nice.
Xander actually laughed at that. "Hell no! Well, the yellow one I could see you pulling off for a specific event or something, but not like as a real dress-dress." He stopped and leaned against the counter to give his foot a break while Sloan made her purchase.
