How Green Becomes Wood

"No, I think it's perfect," Claire said, "We just have to make sure Xander agrees."

"That will be awesome. Just don't freak out if it's still weaker than it had been," Sloan told him, "It's a great thing you didn't have a traditional cast."

"Now we just have to find a way to run it by him without Sloan seeing," Alec mused. "How are we going to do that?"

The answer came in the form of a friend. Rumy was walking by several feet away, and she saw Sloan, she gave a broad wave. "Hey! Sloan! Fancy seeing you here! Hey, Xander."

Xander moved to walk toward Rumy. "Hey, Rumy."

"I don't know," Claire whispered, and then poked her head out behind a rack, "Oh! There's Rumy! That's perfect!"

"Hey!" Sloan replied, taking her receipt and the bag with her dress in it, "We just bought my actual prom dress. My mom totally fell for my plan."

"Nice!" Rumy said, offering Sloan a high five. "Mine suffered an unfortunate accident. I got my new one yesterday. Want to see?" She pulled out her phone to show Sloan.

Since Xander had had his fill of dresses for a while, he wasn't paying attention. Which meant he caught sight of Alec trying to get his attention. He eased over to them, and Alec showed him the necklace. "Approved," Xander declared. "Nice choice, Claire."

"That's really unique!" Sloan said, "It's really cool. What happened to your last one?"

"Alec saw it first, actually! I just confirmed it's a good choice for her," Claire explained taking another peek at Sloan, "I bet we can get to the far cash register without her seeing."

"It fell into a large puddle. Completely by accident," Rumy said with a wink.

Xander took out his wallet and quickly handed over the cash he had. "Better get moving."

Alec saluted and pulled out his own wallet as he hurried toward the register. "It's like spy stuff! For good!"

"A puddle!" Sloan exclaimed, "Why didn't I think of that?! It's so simple!"

"Here," Claire said, handing her part of the payment over, "I'll go join the conversation so it's less suspicious."

"It was kind of hard to find a big enough puddle, but the dog helped by stomping on it after I dropped it," Rumy grinned.

"Got it," Alec agreed, and he took the necklace to pay for it.

"I did such a complicated plot and I could've just dropped it in a puddle," Sloan groaned, "I'm surprised you had to do that, though, I thought your mom's normally pretty chill with you about that stuff?"

"Hey, Rumy, good to see you!" Claire said, walking up to join them.
