Land Down Under (KJDarKnight & Treasure)

It wasn't long before Charlie started serving up a dish for everyone. He had taken note of portion sizes people liked and needed and served accordingly

"Wow Charlie! This looks amazing" peter complimented when he was handed his

Pepper smiled "glad you didn't skip now hm?" Peter grinned a little at that "yeah ok fine you're right mamma"

Charlie handed Badru his plate next "what are you going to hunt for?"

"Mama is always right," Badru told Peter seriously. "Mine always was." To answer Charlie's question, he said, "Rabbit first. Then to track bigger and to lay traps. I think I know where deer are now."

"And don't you forget it Peter" Pepper said but smiled.

"I've heard about dear before! We can get lots of meet and good furs from them and antlers to make tools with" Peter was a bookworm. Now it was time to learn real world skills to go with his knowledge

Badru dipped his head. "Sometimes find antlers when they fall from the deer. They will be fat now, ready for winter."

"Well maybe we will get lucky and find some today while we're tracking" he was clearly beyond excited about the pending adventure.

Mathias came to join them by the fire "got something for you kid" he already looked improved from the day before.

"You do?" Peter asked "every good hunter needs a knife you know" he reached into a pocket and pulled out an old pocket knife. Peters eyes lit up "now this has been passed down in our family. Don't lose it" he held it out to him.

Peter excitedly took the knife and opened it. An old blade for sure. So many times sharpened it no longer held its original shape bit was still a good sharp knife.

Peter was careful as he closed it again "thanks Mathias..I promise to take good care of it" he said. For most it was a small knife but he was a kid. Plenty big for him.

Peter nodded "yes, Mathias taught me how to use a knife before. I know" he had just never owned one before! Especially not such a special family one.

Pepper watched, not totally comfortable with him having a knife, but again, the sooner he learned the better, for his own good.

Lynna gave Peter a little nudge with her foot. "Oi, be nice. Reminders about not playing with sharp objects is always good. Respect those that care enough to remind you."

Gray almost choked on his bite. This from Lynna? He looked up at her, his eyes sparkling.

Lynna scowled at him. "Hush, you."

Peter blinked "I wasn't being rude..was I?" He certainly hadn't intended to be. He looked up at Badru to see if he had indeed offended him, worried now that he had.

Badru smiled and patted Peter's shoulder gently, "No worry, Peter. All is well." He finished his breakfast and set the bowl to be cleaned later. "Are you ready to go?"

Peter smiled, glad that he hadn't offended him at all. Peter started to shovel in the last of his food making Pepper shake her head a little and smile "Be careful out there Peter, you mind Badru whatever he says ok?" she said, clearly worried but still trusting he'd be ok.

Peter nodded eagerly and wiped his mouth, swallowing before he answered "Yes mamma I will" he got to his feet and grabbed his coat again, eager and ready to go

Badru rose and picked up his coat. "I keep him safe," he promised Pepper. Then he led Peter toward the back exit of the cave where they rarely went, having more or less settled more toward the front. The back was closer to the lesser used woods where they would have more luck in the hunt.

Peter followed him, pulling on a hat to keep his head warm as they went. It wasn't much, made from part of one of the blankets but it was something that could be lined with fur later on.

Pepper watched them go, yes making bricks would be the perfect distraction today

The snow was not so deep, fortunately, but despite the cold and wet, the snow was good. It would show them tracks and activity from the animals. They would check the traps after attempting a hunt. Badru's hopes were not high, but there was always a chance.

Lynna walked over to Pepper. "Why don't you invite wolf-girl to join us?"

It was very fortunate as Peter wasn't very tall, short even for his age but his mother was also very short so made sense he could inherit that. Still time to grow tall though. "What do we look for first?" he asked eagerly

--

Pepper nodded "Sure... where is she anyway?" she glanced around the cave but didn't notice her right away

"First we read tracks," Badru told him patiently. "Tracks tell us what is here. It is not good to hunt for otter where there is deer." He paused and pointed down. "This is older wolf track. Only one. This is probably Arena's wolf friend, yes?"

~~

"Um..." Lynna looked around and finally spotted her up by the entrance. "There she is sitting with the wolf. What does she call it? Me?"

Peter nodded as he looked at what Badru showed him "yes probably. Wolves go on packs not alone" he looked back up at him s moment then down at the ground

--

Pepper shrugged "something like that" she stood up and walked over to where Arena was "Good morning Arena...want to come help?"

"Good, but we must remember this in case we see elsewhere," Badru told him. "Then we know is not Meme." He led the way in farther and stopped, pointing to a tree. About three feet of bark had been stripped off of one side and hung in weird curls and shreds. Deep gouges scored the tender white flesh of the tree, but none of it was fresh. "What do you see?"

~~

Arena looked up and inclined her head. She stood and left the wolf's side. "What are we helping?"

Peter was fairly quick to spot the bark "there...looks nike something was marking territory" he pointed out the gouges "uhm wolves and bears I think do that?" He wasn't entirely sure now, trying to recall from his reading

--

"Making bricks" she told her "to build our huts with so we can have privacy sometimes"

"Wolves, not so much. Bears would be much higher," Badru instructed. "This is deer. Before they mate, they use trees to rub off softness off their horns. This is where one has done that some days ago. Is a good sign." He nodded in satsifaction and started looking around for more signs of deer.

~~

Arena followed her over, willing to help. "I remember making bricks long time ago," she murmured.
