Land Down Under (KJDarKnight & Treasure)

Peter jumped a bit and turned around. He didn't have the same cheerful smile, he looked worried "somethings wrong with mama" he said quickly, getting right to the point

"Home. She won't come out of her room" he said before he hurried to lead the way back home.

They lived so low down in the city it took a little while to get there even hurrying like they were.

Finally though they got to the little apartment and Peter let them in, hoping Gray could help

Gray followed Peter through the streets easily. He went straight to Pepper's room and knocked before putting an ear to the wood. His hearing was sharper than most, having been honed by hours of listening to the radio and sitting in utter silence while waiting for those tiny beeps and clicks. He'd be able to pick up any noise on the other side of the door.

There wasn't much noise on the other side but he could hear pepper suck in a sharp pained breath before she spoke "Peter you're supposed to be off to school honey" she called, not realizing who it was.

Gray knocked again, louder and more insistently, like he guessed Peter might if he really needed Pepper. He knocked and kept knocking. Pepper would answer, or he would find another way through the door.

Her heard pepper get up this time and com3 quickly to the door. When she answered she had hastily pulled a robe on but he could still see blood on the collar bone and her face was pretty badly bruised again as well as her neck. This was getting way out of hand. Again.

"Peter wha..." she stopped when she saw him "Gray..." she pulled the robe closer around her neck to hide what he probably already noticed

Gray studied her a minute. Then he turned and signed to Peter. "Go and pack a bag, okay? Don't worry, I will take care of you mama." He turned back to Pepper. "Get dressed. I am taking you to the hospital."

Peter didn't question him, just ran off to his room.

"No. You're not. That's just going to cause more drama.." she said quietly "I can handle this. It's not that bad" she insisted, entirely in denial of how bad it was

CLAP!! Gray brought his hands together in a loud clap right in front of her. "Fine! You may stay here and die in your own blood if you wish, but I am leaving with Peter," He said, his hands snapping out the signs angrily. "I will not let that boy watch as his idiot mother is beaten to death by the man who fathered him. The man who, if I recalled, you swore would never come into your life again. I am leaving here with Peter. With or without you. Understand?"

Pepper flinched when he clapped like that and she looked more and more ashamed of herself as she watched him sign. She stared at him a moment before she signed rather than spoke, her voice failing her "I'll go change" was all she said in response. She didn't wait for him to answer before she slid the door closed Peter was ready before Pepper was but he'd had a head start to get his bag packed, nit really understanding what was going in but trusting Gray

Gray took a breath before turning to smile at Peter. "Good job! Your mother is getting packed, too, then we will go out for a bit. Are you sure you have everything?"

Peter nodded "I don't have much" he shrugged and glanced towards Peppers foor a moment "what's wrong with Mamma?" He asked and looked back up at him

"Someone hurt her," Gray said simply. "We are going to get her help then you are going to stay with me for a little bit. We can have fun when you aren't in school."

Peter seemed even more concerned "who would hirt mamma?" He asked innocently. At least Pepper had managed to keep him away from it all. Minus seeing the aftermath of course "did she male someone mad at work again?"

Gray would have left it, but instead, he frowned and shook his head. Peter would have figured it out sooner or later, anyway. Kids were not stupid. "No. Your father has been hurting her. She tried to hide it, and that was wrong. You should never hide it when someone is hurting you."

Peter stared at him in total shock "daddy?" He shook his head "no daddy wouldn't!" He loved his father, he couldn't believe he would hurt his mother like that!

That was about when Pepper stepped out again. Peter ran to her and hugged her legs. She put a hand gently on his head and looked up at Gray "what did you say to him?"

"What you should have the first time," Gray signed. "Only because he asked. Come, let us go to the hospital now. It is quiet out. Not many will notice you, and no one you know." Gray did feel bad about telling Peter. Not because of what he said, but that it had to be him. Pepper never should have let it get to this point. If she was going to hide the fact that Peter's father was a... bunch of words that Gray didn't even think there were signs for, she should have cut it off when she first left the "man."

Pepper looked back down at the boy and crouched to his level to speak to him first "sweetie...I need you to be tough until we get to Grays...can you do that honey?" She spoke softly.
Peter nodded rubbing his eyes. Still very much distressed. "That's my good boy" she kissed his head gently "we will talk there. I promise" again he nodded as she stood then cling on to her arm as they walked out of the apartment

Gray touched his shoulder sympathetically then guided them to the hospital. When they arrived, the nurse took one look at Pepper and scowled darkly. Her eyes cut over to Gray, but he held up his empty, clearly blood free hands. You couldn't leave the kind of damage that Pepper took without at least bruising your own knuckles.

"Come with me, sweety. We'll get you sorted out," the nurse said, guiding Pepper back. "Your boy and... husband... should wait out here."
