Land Down Under (KJDarKnight & Treasure)

Misty sighed and started after him, not convinced they could make it up here. A lot of people were going to die. She could tell that already and she worried she would be one of them, not cut out for this.
"So besides your dad...any family?" She changed the subject whence she caught up to him

--

Faelar deflated a bit "right then..." he didn't say any more about it and just followed her

"Not anymore, nope," Jonah said. "Mum died a few years back, no siblings, all that. Checks off all the boxes for a sad story, right?" He pointed to her feet. "Watch your step." He didn't sound at all bothered, and he wasn't really.

~~

Lynna smirked in the dark but hid it from him. After a while, she said casually, "Of course, if you chose to hang around and lend a bit of your own expertise, I'm sure survival will be that much more guaranteed."

Close but not all" she said, glancing down at his warning so she didn't fall. "Not that it's a competition" she added but didn't elaborate. Nobody ever asked so she just assumed nobody was interested.

--

Oh no offer is rescinded, sounds like you have all the help you need" Faelar smirked a little, though her comment still stung a bit

Jonah shrugged. "You're about the only one who thinks that. At least of the ones who've asked." He hopped down the large step they'd come up before and reached up to help her down. "Most folk who ask then tell me all the ways I have it good compared to them."

~~

Lynna snickered. "Awe, I hurt your feelings, didn't I? Poor fellow."

Misty accepted the help down "well. It's just a matter of perspective. What's hard for one person might be easier for another. No two are the same, so I try not to compare" she explained

--

"Pfft? I got thicker skin than that!" Faelar said with as much confidence as ever, even if it was a lie.

Jonah stopped and looked down at her. "But you do compare. You compare yourself to others all the time. I saw it in your eyes when we were talking about survival up there. You think you are a pitiable thing without the talents of other stronger people, so that means you'll die up here. Isn't that about right?"

~~

"Uh-huh," Lynna said, not buying it for a second. "Anyway, we should be there in a minute. Do you hear anyone around?"

Misty looked away "that's not the same thing" she said "I'm talking about personal life..mental troubles not physical facts"

--

He listened for a moment "nah don't hear nothin"

"It's the same thing from where I'm standing," Jonah said. "You're putting yourself down in a hole where you don't need to be, but you're the only one who can get you out of it." He looked away. "I've seen people who should have survived die, and people who should have died live. Your chances are exactly the same as mine or Lynna's or Mathias. If you think of it that way. Constantly dooming yourself like this, you probably will die. If you don't, then you'll end up alone, which might be worse. So stop dooming and glooming yourself. You're important to this mission."

~~

"Alright, then we should be safe to go up," Lynna said, trying to find the latch. "Where is that thing."

Misty fell silent, not sure if she could beleive that or not but it gave her something to think about. She didn't speak again until they reached the bottom "guess I should go back down..not much use building with this arm"

--

Faelar stepped in and helped feel around for it "got it" he said after a moment, then pulled it for her

"Nope, not for building, but we need a good brain for numbers and patterns," Jonah pointed out. "If you need to rest, go rest, but if you want something to do, come with me and help us figure stuff out. We don't just need builders."

~~

"Thanks," Lynna said. She grinned down at Faelar. "Looks like you're useful after all," she teased then dashed up as quick as a rat. "Pepper! We're back!"

She smiled a little at that. He was making her feel useful. She needed that "tight..then lets drop off my bag and we can go help" no need to carry that heavy thing around.

--

Faelar chuckled "luck" he said before going up after her.

"Welcome back" Pepper smiled "didn't run into any trouble did you?"

"Good," Jonah said. "Still don't know where Mathias got himself off to." He checked carefully to make certain no one was spying before he opened the door to the bunker. "Should limit our trips in and out if we can."

~~

Lynna shook her head. "Nope. Clear all the way there and back. Where's Misty? We got some of her stuff as well as a bunch of stuff for the stock pile."

Pepper was about to answer when she heard the top hatch open "could be her and Jonah now coming back" she answered "went to go check the weather "

Faelar set all the bags and things down in thr living room

Lynna grinned as she dropped everything next to Faelar's piles and bounded forward. "Hey! Misty! You're right on time. Faelar was pretty great and helped me bring up a bunch of stuff from down below." She started back to the pile and started taking things from one of her bags. "I grabbed everything that looked at all important or sciency, although, now that I have it in real light, it looks like one of those science things was actually a hairdryer... hmm, oh well."

Jonah crossed the room silently and put Misty's bag in the corner she seemed to have staked out for herself.

Misty was confused as she came in "you went...to my house?" She was surprised they would go and do that for her.

"Got some clothes and personal stuff ere too" Faelar indicated her bag and the wood box.

"...I..." she paused "thank you..both"

"Sure!" Lynna said cheerfully. "It wasn't too far from my place, and if I'm getting some stuff for me, why not you? Besides, it's a great excuse to go down there." She grinned at Misty and gently nudged Misty's shoulder with her own. "I hope you have a great fondness for that hairdryer."

Jonah left them to it and walked over to Pepper. "Any idea where Mathias is?"

Misty smiled a little "comes in handy" she smiled "thanks Lynna...I really appreciate it" she walked over and picked up the wooden box with the handle, seeming happier about that than a hair dryer

"Up top" Pepper shrugged "to see what he can do to help I suppose"

Lynna caught Faelar's eye and gave him a thumbs up. Good grab! It looked like the box was as important as he'd thought.

Jonah nodded. "Everyone who's capable needs to come up and help set up for the coming storm."

Faelar smiled. He had noticed Misry's look too.

"We have thirty-six hours" Misty spoke up, carefully tucking the box away for later

"I can help after lunch. I am a mechanic" Pepper offered. She had a good eye for how things should be constructed to work properly

"Good. You'll be needed," Jonah said. "Better make it a fast lunch. "36 hours is plenty of time for one person, not so much for getting a whole herd of them to comply."

Lynna snickered. "A whole herd of people would argue about whether or not it's raining while they are drowning."
