Smugglers Cove (Love2write and Silence)

(Rofl Her question wasn't very specific.)

Killian frowned at the doctor. "I don't like flattery." He didn't think that any captain would be dumb enough to tell the doctor that what the crew needed wasn't necessary. If his men wanted treatment for something that bothered them then, they needed it. Expecting top performance usually meant you gave whatever they wanted. Having never bothered with being on other ships before he couldn't say that his practice of leadership was different.

Gradually the red crept to his cheeks as the woman scooted in next to him. This was different than seeing his favorite harpy. The other woman he would go to her house and there wasn't anyone around to see them together. Star was close and she was talking to him. Keeping his eyes glued to the plate he nodded. "Mmhmm." Taking another bite of it he glanced over at her and kept his mouth shut, but managed an awkward grin.

(Star: "He's hopeless")

"You're supposed to say, its very good, Star. Thankyou for cooking such a wonderful meal." Star prods him with her finger.

"Are you two a romantic couple? Are you sexually active?" Kato asks as if it were the most innocent question in the world. Star's jaw drops in response to his blunt question, her face turning bright red. Timo snickers, his own face and ears red. "It will affect how I observe your medical health in the future." Kato explains, in that monotone voice, seeming to sense the awkwardness that had arisen due to his question. After a moment he says. "Hmm, perhaps that question would have been best posed in private. I will attempt to not cause further stress."

Swallowing the food he looked up at her and shrugged. "Ok...Its very good. Thank you and I forgot the rest." Killian honestly couldn't remember since he was busy enjoying the food. What he didn't expect was for the doctor to ask if they were romantic. "Um..." The captain frowned at the doctor. "Uh...I'm uh...Well of course I've had sex and I like it. Not with her I uh...Well...Do you have to know this?" Momentarily the awkward had bypassed Killian until he noticed the boy was turning red. "Timo you don't listen to this. When you turn 15 I'll take you down to the district so you know what to do."

At least the doctor had some sense and decided to save the rest of the conversation for later. The captain caught a look from Star and he frowned. He had no idea what the look on her face was about. "What?"

******************************************************

The next morning came early with a little extra turbulence. Killian heard a little knock on his door. Getting up he limped over to the door. He did his best not to frown, but mornings were not his favorite. "What?" Sliding the door open he saw the boy was looking a little woozy. "Awe shit.." Killian grabbed the boy under his arms and pulled him into his room. "You lay on my bed." Reaching underneath the bunk he pulled out a bucket. "Use that if you feel like you're gonna puke. I'll go get whatever you need."

Listening to the boy he nodded. "Alright." All the rattling in the ship had him a little extra wobbly. Returning to the room with the boy's request he then started back out toward the kitchen. Since he was up Killian figured he might as well grab a snack for himself.

A noticeable leap in the ship set him off balance and Killian twisted slightly as he reached for the hand rail. They were on ships like this for a reason. Still he felt his knee give way and then the crack sounded. "Agh!" Hitting the floor he remained sitting for several moments. All the shaking only seemed to wake up Adam who stepped over the captain and ran for the navigation room. Killian didn't mind so much. He wanted to see if he could get up. Grabbing onto the handrail he pulled himself up and immediately crumpled when he tried to put weight on his leg. The captain grit his teeth and leaned against the wall.

Leaning forward he held onto the leg and winced. Killian grabbed his leg behind the knee and forced it to bend. "Gaah haha..." Finally giving up he laid on his side and moaned.

Star buries her face in her hand having no words with which to answer his question.

*****************

Timo woke to the shuddering of the ship. He sat up and lost his stomach right into his trashcan. It was then he sought the comfort of the captain, as Mike had advised him too. Killian immediately sat him on the bed and handed him a bucket which he promptly vomited into. When the Captian asked what he needed, he could only think of one thing. With a flush in his cheeks he replied. "My bear."
Killian didn't even hesitate and ran off to get it. A moment later he was holding the bear under one arm and puking into the bucket he held with the other. "Ugh...."
...

Star awoke when she heard someone yelling outside her room. She jumped out of bed and opened the door. Killian was a little way's down the hallway, outside the kitchen. His face twisted in pain as he clutched his leg. "Killian!" She rushed to him, putting a hand on his shoulder. "What happened!?"

She barely listened to his explanation before she ran off to get Kato. They returned a moment later and Kato looked over Killian's new injury. "You've broken your leg...again. Come, lets get you to the med bay." He puts one of Killian's arm over his shoulder and Star takes the other.

Killian was trying hard not to be too noisy but, he hadn't been much one to tolerate leg pain. It was already sore most days and this made the pinnacle of pain for the time. Holding onto his leg he groaned again. Trying not to look when he heard Star call his name rolled to his back. With her kneeling over him it wasn't like he could avoid her or deny the fact that he'd just done himself in doing something normal.

"Ah...Its my leg." Sitting up again he put a hand over it and winced. He would have asked her to help him back to his bunk but, she was already off. Maybe if he rested for a while his leg would feel better though he was beginning to doubt it when the ship jolted again and the pain shot up his entire leg. Naturally it caused him to tense and it only made things worse. His leg was starting to spasm with the bones out of line. "Rmmmm." Killian growled a little and he would have attempted frowning a little deeper when the doctor came but, he was actually somewhat glad to see the man. Using both of them as aid to get into the medical bay he gingerly moved himself onto the bed.

The first little poke from the doctor hurt but, not enough for him to complain much more. Seemed that the man thought this would be a perfectly good time to put the plates and rods in his entire leg to stabilize it along with the extra supports at the knee. It was all internal and he already had to set the leg which apparently would have had to be re-broken for this process anyway. "Oooh lucky me." Groaning the words he shifted on the bed. Otherwise they would let his leg heal and then he would have the opportunity to be laid up again with the surgery. "Lets just do it all at once. My leg is killing me."

**************************************************************

When Killian woke up from the surgery he was still in the medical bay and he was covered in a sheet and blankets. He noticed that his clothes were all missing except his boxers. It didn't matter too much at this point. Even with the drugs his leg still ached. Putting an arm over his eyes he tried to hide the fact that it still hurt. Breathing was always a dead give away though. The captain's breathing was a shorter and more shallow. Both of them indications that he didn't feel good.

He hears someone sit next to him. "Made you some soup." Star's voice sounds. She smiles at him lightly as he lowers his arm. "Shall I feed you or can you manage?"
She teases.

As he eats she updated him on the status of the ship. The turblence had been from an exploding star several thousand light-years away from them. Adam was currently re-plotting their course to avoid a massive asteroid field in their path and Mike had found poor Timo retching in Killian's bedroom. Kato had given the boy some anti-nausea meds and was now sleeping again in his own bed.

"Doc says the surgery went well. And if you need more painkillers just press that button there. Only one dose at a time alright? You could kill yourself if you over do it."

Slowly lowering his arm he noticed that Star was serious about the food. Killian winced and took the bowl. "I can feed myself." It was amazing how everything was seemingly connected to his leg. Hardly seemed possible though it felt like even having to turn his head made his leg hurt. After a few bites he started to feel a little queasy. Giving the bowl back to her he just nodded at the instructions for the button and pain killers. "I'll just let somebody else do it. Can't remember if I pushed the button or not."

After several minutes he did push the button to raise the bed to a sitting position. His leg throbbed even more but only for a brief moment. Pulling the sheet to the side he saw dressing taped all the length of his leg. "Mmm...That's lovely." Setting the sheet back down he laid back in the bed. "When do I get to go to my own room?" He didn't want to sit in the medical bay any longer than was necessary. He couldn't really get out of his room once he was in there but, it wouldn't matter much to him.

Killian woke up a few hours later and he saw she was still there. "You just sat there and watched me sleep this whole time?"

"You can go back to your room in a couple hours after the swelling has gone down a bit. For now Mike and I are preparing your room so you'll still have support for your leg while you're on your bed."
She smirks as he drifts back off to sleep. Reaching up she gently pushed back the hair from his forehead. Why was he both so endearing and frustrating at the same time? Granted that's how it seemed to be with both men.
She got her datapad entertaining herself on the galactic network as Killian slept.
When he awoke again, she smirked at him. "Well, not the whole time. I did have to get up and use the restroom, and get some food and I took a shower, checked on Timo...but other than that yeah...I've been here. You're cute when you sleep. All that tension just leaves your face and you're actually handsome." She teases.

Killian looked at her and started to laugh at her comments. He didn't want to laugh but the pain meds must have been kicking in. Somebody pushed the button and now it was all over. "No...I'm not cute." Laughing again it was out of frustration but, he couldn't stop himself. Rolling his head to the side he saw the doctor standing in the room and he grinned. "Oh hey...I know you can't be bouncing around that fast but, wow." Whatever they gave him had Killian completely disoriented.

By now Mike had dropped in to see the captain. It was obvious to him that Killian was higher than a kite. He was trying to talk to the doctor and none of it made sense. Then of course he was thinking that it was time to get up too. The older man rushed right over and pushed Killian back into the bed. "No I think we need to get you to bed."

"No." Laughing again Killian shook his head. "You know I'm old enough. I can do it myself."

"Yep you sure are." Mike handed Killian his shirt. "How about you put that on for me?" He was trying to help the doctor get the captain out of the medical bay and so far it was looking like it would be exciting. He'd never seen Killian hopped up like this before.

Killian turned the shirt over and over in his hands. He frowned at it and finally put it on inside out. "There I feel better."

It took Kato, Mike and Star all working together to get the high Captain back to his room. They propped his leg up on several cushion and made sure he didn't get tangled up in the I.V. He kept wanting to get up and they had to keep pushing him down.
"Someone is going to have to stay with him till he comes down." Kato notes.
"I'll stay." Star sat on bed beside Killian. "Don't worry. I got this." She waves the boys off then puts a firm hand on Killian's chest. "Just stay laying down, Captain. For me? If you're a good boy and stay in bed...I'll give you a kiss."

Killian wanted to check on the cargo in the ship. He wanted to make sure the crew was alright despite the fact that he could account for all of them. "No no...Its not time for this. I told you we're going out hunting." It was treasure hunting but, that would have sounded dumb. Instead they were walking him to his room. "This is mutiny. Mike you bastard!" Yelling at the man from his bed he watched him leave.

He was left with Star and he frowned. "Hmm...You're stuck with me now. I like it. Everybody else did their own thing but, I always knew..." His mind kind of drifted off and then he noticed her hand on his chest. "Haven't you seen enough?" The answer wasn't quite related though it was interesting. "A kiss huh?" A chuckle started in the back of his throat. "You got it all wrong. I'm not supposed to be laying down when you kiss me."

******************************

The medications following were still strong but, not enough to send Killian for a complete loop. Instead he settled down and started to get tired again. Making a slight pout he looked at Star. "My leg hurts. Do we have Jell-O?" It was always a good sounding sick food. He still didn't want anything real strong in his stomach and the gelatin dessert sounded pretty good.

When she came back he tried to shift in the bed and winced a little. "How long is this healing supposed to take?" Sounded like it was going to be the typical 6-8 weeks just for the first stage and then an additional several weeks more of therapy. "You get a chance to check on Timo?"

(This is a futuristic world. It would be probably that healing takes half the time.)

Star put up with Killian's whining and grouching. For having such a tough personality, he didn't handle pain very well. She got him his jello, fluffed his pillows and answered his questions. Then he asked about Timo.
She smiles. He tried to not act like he cared too much about the kid, but it was obvious he did. "He's better." She replies. "He finally managed to keep a little food down and now that we're past the turbulence there isn't anything to make him sick anymore. Poor kid." She chuckles shaking her head.

"You probably don't remember since you were high, but Kato started the first round of shots on Mike. Apparently they've already started working wonders." She laughs. "He's like a little kid now. Bouncing around, bending and twisting. In a couple weeks you'll probably be doing the same thing with your knee."

(Yes, that would be half the time. Bones don't heal very fast if you have to put screws and stuff into them. It can take up to a year for that stuff to completely heal. So he could be walking in about 3 -4 weeks. Then about 3-4 weeks of therapy in addition and then likely the second stage would just be making sure that he doesn't do too much wild stuff to disrupt the bones growing and filling in the area around the drilling they might have an ultrasound type machine that would enhance bone growth. That could also help since an untreated injury like this could have caused some arthritis after all those years. Basically about a 10 week plan could cure almost everything wrong.)

Killian frowned at her. "Oh." He didn't like that the kid had been feeling sick. "Timo needs to have an appetite. Kid is too skinny anyway." Not that any of them on the ship were fat by any stretch of the imagination. As long as she was around he didn't mind being fussy cause she stuck around longer. Whining about the pain in the leg could only accomplish so much and so he figured the next battle plan was to see what she knew of the crew.

The woman seemed to pick up on his plan and started to talk about Mike. "Hmm..." He nodded. "Well its about time that old man started to do his work right." Already he was running out of things to ask her. Killian adjusted how he was laying and decided to take one of the pillows out from underneath his leg. It was too high to be comfortable. Taking the extra pillow he sat up and shoved it behind himself. Then he realized that he gave himself away. He wasn't quite as helpless as he let on. A sheepish grin came over his face. "Well it was worth a try. Usually if something happens I just get shoved in here and I take care of myself best I can." Trying to think of something romantic was proving to be extremely difficult at this point. "Uh..." Killian was still looking at her. "You're uhm...You look nice today."

Star smirks at him as he adjusts his own pillows. "Baby..." She teases. Then he complimented her. The first time she could remember him doing so without being prompted. She smiles at him brightly. "Well, thankyou. I'd say you're looking nice as well, but...I'd be lying." She stands and plants a kiss on his forehead. "Get some rest. I'll be back with lunch later."

Star opens the door to find Kato and Timo standing there. "Hello boys. Eavesdropping were we?" She puts a hand on her hip as if scolding them. Timo's face went bright red, but Kato remained neutral as usual. "I wanted to check on the Captain." Kato says.
"Me too! Can we see him?" Timo scoots by Star as she stands aside. The boy rushed to Killian's side, looking worried. "Are you ok? Does your leg hurt?"
"Excellent questions." Kato nods. "More specifically, however, you should ask where exactly there is pain and at what level it is at."
Timo rolls his eyes at Kato. "He's trying to teach me how to be a doctor."

Killian laughed a little at the woman's response. "I know I don't look good." Nobody looked good when they were laid up. "You'll have to come back when I'm sleeping so you can see how good I look then." He was pretty sure she'd said something about liking his looks when he slept. It was weird. She wouldn't have been the first woman to say it either. Leaning over in the bed he watched her leave.

Right outside the door he saw that there were visitors. As badly as he wanted to know what was happening board the ship he didn't really want the constant stream of visitors either. Granted this wasn't constant yet. Even if Timo was trying to be careful the boy was moving too fast for Killian to even keep up. It took him a few seconds to comprehend what the boy was asking. "Oh yeah I'm fine. My leg hurts a little bit." A grin came to his face and he reached up to ruffle the boy's hair. "It looks a whole lot worse than it feels." He might have been lying through his teeth but, he didn't need the boy worrying about stuff.

Then the doctor stepped in and Killian almost had to roll his eyes. "Yes I can see that the doctor is trying to teach you. I need a little cup of water. You wanna go get that for me?" Once the boy left he looked at the doctor. "Of course it hurts like hell. My whole damn leg. Feels like you just saw right into the bones and it'd be about the same." He wasn't sure how else to describe the way it felt. "Pain is manageable but, if it got much worse I might have to start complaining more."

"I thought as much." Kato replied, setting down a doctor's kit by Killian's bedside. He pulled back the blanket from Killian's leg and prepared a shot. "This will reduce the swelling in your leg and in turn, reduce the pain. If that does not work within 30 minutes then I will increase your pain dosage."
He inserts the long needle into the area around his knee and injects the serum, then wraps the leg again. He stands and gathers the kit. "Will you be needing anything else, Captain?"

A few hours later a knock sounds at Killian's door. Its not Star who walks in with a mid-day meal but Adam, looking serious. "Captain. Looks like a ship battle not too far ahead of us. Looks to be an Alliance cruiser against a couple resistance ships. Impossible to tell who's winning at the moment. Do you want us to engage or go around?"

(I've had a shot in the knee before. You have to have the knee at about a 90 degree angle so that it opens the joint and the needle doesn't hit something.)

The needle the doctor pulled out looked like something you'd stick in an elephant. "That thing better work." Killian never minded needles but, this one was a different story. He winced when the doctor moved the blanket off his leg. Around the incision marks was plenty of swelling and the whole leg was covered in bruises. Surgery wasn't anything he'd ever had and he wasn't sure if it was normal to have bruising or not. Must have been cause the doctor wasn't too concerned about it. The captain took a deep breath when he felt the doctor bend his knee for the shot. He let a long breath out while Kato moved his leg back to its place and wrapped it.

"Thank you." Even if Killian didn't think that the shot would do everything the doctor said he figured it was worth a try. Laying back in the bed he decided to rest for just a few minutes. It must have been a lot longer than that cause he didn't wake till he heard a knock at the door. "Come in." He'd half expected it would be Star or Kato. It wasn't either of them and the news wasn't good.

Killian shook his head. "Do not engage. We're not a battle ship all we do is smuggle. If they engage us we have no choice and then I'll need Star to take command." He was reluctant to say it, but he knew he wasn't in any kind of condition to run things.

(Ouch. Also, sorry for the short post, but I don't want to continue before hearing Killian's response so Adam can respond appropriately.)

Adam looked annoyed by that last statement. He crossed his arms. "Star? Why her? I get you like her, probably more than the rest of us, but either me or Mike would be a much better choice in running the ship in that sort of situation."

(It feels weird mainly. Not too horrible.)

Killian sat up in the bed and he moved his leg off the pillows. Grabbing the bars above his bed he pulled himself up. There were plenty of mornings he needed the help to get himself up so he was familiar with using them. "I told you Star would take command. You can't see everything when you navigate and you're the best damn pilot. I need you there. Mike knows the machine better than her. Do what I said or I'll come over that and bust your damn face. She can bring the board in here if we need and I'll direct her."

The blood rushing to his leg made it hurt again but, he wasn't about to back down when he had a troublesome crew member standing in his quarters and throwing a fit. "Do you have any other questions?"

(What feels weird? Posting one to two liners? That's how I usually do it. Allows for more realistic conversations even if the posts are short. Cause trying to post more forces you to assume what the response is going to be ahead of time, even if originally the response would have led to another conversation or action. Just a thought.)

"No, Sir." Adam grumbled in reply. "I'll get us a safe distance away." He leaves the room, knowing better than to argue with the captain. He pushes past Star as he leaves, not bothering to apologize for bumping into her.
Star watches him go, a plate of hot food in her hand.
"What's his problem?" She sets the plate on Killian's lap. "Made your favorite. And I've got water boiling for hot chocolate too." She smiles, knowing how much he secretly loved
hot chocolate.
