Killian walked to the end of the road and he turned with Claire and Star toward the first tunnel. It was the far North and he figured that it was the furthest from the meeting place. He'd already put his votes in ahead of time. There was some warning that he should be careful. Some folk blamed him for the death of their loved ones and maiming of others. That one day that he started the uprising and killed Dougal had been a factor that was playing out in disastrous measures ever since. True they were about to become free, but half the people hated him for the things he did. What if they just ended up in limbo between the two different councils? All things considered he wasn't quite sure that he wanted the new council to win. If they did he knew that Kavis would still cause problems. The man wasn't fond of having a new way of life.
Everything was quiet for nearly half an hour. It was about time that the tunnels of folk put their votes out and Killian took his to the one gathering them. Kavis was sitting with his council facing the others that were running. It was time for the count now that all the folks had put out their vote in secret. There was no need for anyone to feel intimidated. At least that was the thought behind doing it this way.
Even while Anna sat on her seat across from the Chippeqouti council she couldn't help feeling that they were indeed far more dangerous that what she had anticipated. So far they had been completely compliant with the demands of the people. Still she couldn't shake the feeling that maybe Kavis had something else planned. Perhaps he was one step ahead of them again. A Chip didn't seem to be likely to just give up and yet here they were fully accepting of what happened. Looking up at Kato she saw that he was still worried and yet nothing had happened. Maybe the damage done to their population had been enough.
The vote took several hours to count and all the while it was peaceful. When they began to tally up the numbers Anna reached over and squeezed Kato's hand. Finally the man announced, "People of the colony have voted for the new council." A round of cheers went up and the Chippeqouti quietly clapped. Today was full of tension and it was the perfect time to carry out one last step that would ensure that this new council divided or that it would prove itself to be corrupt immediately after they were voted in. As the people were allowed out of the tunnels Kavis stood. "We are willing to live under the new rule of the council. I have seen the error in our way of life if we are to share a planet equally with humans. I must ask for one case to be put before the council and the people this day."
At first all the people waited as if stunned that Kavis would subject himself to the council and yet none of the other Chippeqouti protested. They must have admitted their defeat. Anna couldn't help feeling that this was a trap of sorts. Since none of the others spoke she nodded. "We are fair and we will hear all sides. What is this matter?"
Bowing a little lower the Chippeqouti showed his respect and continued. "It is a matter of murder. One named Killian Laulorin killed in cold blood a Chippeqouti and as a result many of your children, wives, husbands, and friends have suffered. Many died on both sides because of his choice." A murmur began to roll through the crowd. He knew that the many of the humans would agree. They hated and feared Killian more than the Chippeqouti did. "I demand on behalf of the murdered and maimed that there be a trial held."
Anna almost caught her breath. Already they were faced with an impossible decision. One that she knew divided the people. Very few trusted Killian and the rest of them seemed to side with Kavis. It was doubtful that Killian had an argument good enough to save him from their justice and if they did not hang him or shoot him then they would expect that all other murderers would be kept as well. All the council understood the predicament and Anna raised her head after they spoke for a short time. "Then we will have him arrested until the council may hear both sides of the case and make a decision following." She felt badly knowing that Star would be heartbroken. It made Anna sick to her stomach. She knew that the Chippeqouti were far more harsh in their punishments.
Whatever the vote for the council turned out to be Killian was sure he would hear about it later. He went home with Star so he could work on a few ideas for the cabin in the mountains. A knock at the door sounded and he set the book work aside since Star was taking a nap. Glancing over at Claire he winked and then pulled the door open. Several guards stood outside and Killian's heart nearly jumped into his throat. "Hell no!" He couldn't get the door closed fast enough as the guards forced their way in and one of them hit him with a stun gun.
Quickly others of them began to cuff his hands behind his back and drag him out the door. Claire sat on the floor screaming. Even if she didn't understand what was going on the baby knew they were hurting her dad. Putting her little hands in the air she almost seemed to be begging to be picked up and comforted. Killian grunted as he was pushed out the door. He barely caught sight of Star coming out of the room and Claire crying from her place in the sitting room.
