The Vampire's Apprentice

Clancy glanced at the cake a bit wistfully. "It is a shame I cannot taste it, but perhaps you might serve it to our company tomorrow?" He glanced at the clock. "Now, I have work to do tonight, so let us hear your questions quickly, please."

She thought about it whilst putting the desert back in the fridge.

"I don't have any."

Clancy actually froze and turned to stare at her. "Excuse me? You have no questions?" he repeated in shock. He crossed the kitchen and put the back of his cool hand to her forehead - the first time he had touched her since carrying her home. "Are you feeling quite well?"

Kitty smiled, chuckling a little, and reached up to grasp his hand gently and pull it down to where she could examine it. "I don't have any. I don't always have questions."

Clancy let her hold his hand, hiding the fact that he was fascinated by the warmth of her skin behind a critical look. "Hmm... Then I was highly misinformed. I did not think it possible."

The paleness of his skin was exceedingly stark in comparison to her own sun-tanned hands. She rubbed a thumb over one of Clancy's smooth fingernails before releasing his palm and stuffing her hands back into her pocket. Kitty looked up at him. "Well... now you know."

"Ever a fascinating creature, Miss Kitty," Clancy said smoothly. He turned and started for the stairs. He placed a foot on the bottom step and paused. "Oh, yes. I have a question for you. When is your birthday?"

"Not that far away, then," Clancy remarked. "I shall be in my office in case you need anything." He went upstairs quickly.

"Okay." Kitty agreed. She let Sam out and back in again before seeking out another book to read. Pulling one at random from the shelf, she briefly examined the cover before tucking it under her arm and glancing towards his office on her way to her bedroom.

Clancy was already on the phone, sitting back with one arm folded over his chest. His red hair fell lightly across his brow, and he brushed it out of his eyes. He did not notice Kitty, his eyes on the ceiling.

Hmm.... Kitty took brief note and continued on her way. She climbed atop her bed and opened the cover of this strange book, not sure what to expect and not really expecting anything at all. She read.

Sam climbed up on the bed and lay at her feet. He was sound asleep in seconds.

Clancy made call after call, but between calls, he checked on his plant and looked up the care instructions. Then he moved it to where the light would reach it best before going back to the phone.

Kitty hardly bothered to check the hour, engulfed in reading this new material. Time seemed irrelevant, and it was nice to have the paperback pages between her and everything else. She was waiting.

Clancy finished his phone call and closed everything down. Then he went to Kitty's door and tapped on it. "You never did tell me where it was you wished to go," he commented.

She stuck a finger in her book and looked up at him. "I never did figure it out. It's like all ideas were sapped today."

"Sure." Kitty checked the page of her book and set it aside, trying not to disturb Sam as she pulled herself off the bed.
