The Vampire's Apprentice

"If I told you, it wouldn't be a surprise, would it?" Kitty answered, then waved dismissively. "You'll know soon enough."

Kitty watched the door click softly shut, then set the notepad and pencil on her nightstand before climbing under the covers, sighing as she let herself melt into the bed. A brief yawn and a twist to lie on her stomach, the girl was fast asleep within minutes.

-

Never had she been so happy to see a list of tasks. The notion made her giggle a bit; happy to have chores? Such a strange concept. Nonetheless, she was pleased.

Sam gruffed and wagged his stump of a tail. He had no idea she was excited to see such items as, "Clean clothing if possible, dust bookshelves, wipe down livingroom." He only knew she was excited, and he was happy for it.

After breakfast, Kitty set about completing her tasks. They weren't particularly difficult, but they were certainly time-consuming. It was noon before she knew it, and she was only half done with everything. Still, all that was left to do were a few smaller tasks, so the girl guessed she'd be done in another couple hours. Maybe afterward she'd be able to start on a new book.

It was just a little after noon when a hesitant tap came at the door. Mrs. Mooney stood on the porch, shifting awkwardly while she waited.

Kitty looked up, pausing in what she was doing, and went to go answer the door. She was surprised to see Mrs. Mooney there, but also concerned. The latter she buried someplace where it wouldn't be revealed in her expression.

"Oh, hello there, Mrs. Mooney. How can I help you?" She asked politely.

"Um, hello, is Clancy here? I mean, Mr. McCleary?" Mrs. Mooney asked, looking incredibly awkward and like she might change her mind at any second.

"Uh, no, I just wanted to talk to him. About last night." Her cheeks were going pink, but she kept her head up high. "When should I come back? Unless he'd like to... no, it's better I come see him. I just wanted to set some things straight."

"He's generally awake after sunset, so if you're going to talk to him, then would be the time." She said. "I can always take a note, if you need."

Mrs. Mooney almost seemed ready to say yes then changed her mind and shook her head. "No, but thank you." She hesitated a second longer then looked at Kitty. "Do you like your life here with him? Do you mind doing all the menial tasks?"

Why was everyone asking her this? Was it really that strange of a predicament?

Kitty nodded, smiling lightly. "I enjoy my life here very much. It gives me a sense of purpose that I lacked before; I wouldn't exchange it for the world."

"You know, I hardly ever think of it like that." Kitty admitted. "We're like... family. Or, at the least, friends."
