The Vampire's Apprentice

"Ahhhh." She nodded. That made sense. "I suppose when night is the only time to exist, that makes things a little difficult. Best enjoy this while we've got it, yeah?"

"Indeed," Clancy nodded. "No one knows how long they shall live. Most vampires actually die far younger than most humans. Did you know that?"

"Hm.... I did not. Makes some amount of sense, though...." Kitty thought about it. "How come you've lived for such a long time? Don't you ever get tired of it?"

"Oh, I've been bored off and on, of course. Primarily, I survived because I was too stubborn to die," Clancy chuckled. "I eventually did find some help with another older vampire, and they obligingly kept me alive until I learned enough to survive on my own. Through the years since then, I have found various ways of keeping myself entertained."

"Yes," he said flatly. "Plus, people who are too curious as to our kind can be... problematic. I needed to see what kind of knowledge you possessed and if you would be trouble. And you were different. Different is interesting."

"That's good." She approved. "And I'll be with you till the end of my life... so hopefully it stays that way." Kitty gave him a big grin.

"Well, if you ever do get boring, you will have one final contribution to my life," Clancy told her lightly. Then he smiled with a bit of fang. He was just teasing, but it was still amusing.

She gave a nervous laugh. That wasn't something she thought particularly funny, but tried hard not to let it show.

"Doesn't hurt to ask." She shrugged. "Now, let me make this clear, I am not one for vengeance... I don't approve of it... but some people are a nuisance." There was a pause as she thought about what exactly she was saying. "Specifically, there's one group of individuals who's particularly fond of terrorizing the homeless community. I've wondered for a while where their base is, but never got very far in trying to find it."

"Well...." Kitty put things together in her head before saying them. "We only ever met once, but plenty of other people have their stories. They tend to hang on the east side of town and are supposed to be accountable for many kidnappings and murders, hardly any of which would be mentioned in police reports or cause for investigation since the majority of these victims were homeless. Nobody cares about the homeless," she said grimly. "I almost got into a lot of trouble the one time I did start poking around. Can't tell you how I got out of that since the whole thing is a vague blur." An inexplicable look crept over her expression. "I think they thought I was dead or something...."
