The Vampire's Apprentice

"In a way, yes." He glanced at her. "The other day, I had to talk you out of running straight on to the danger. Now you are slowing down?"

"I never said running." She corrected. "This is a venture, not an ambush. There's no rush to be anyplace, is there?"

"Well, we are on a timer," Clancy reminded her. "I would rather get us as much time as possible just in case we are delayed."

"Sounds bad when you say it like that," Kitty commented under her breath. "There's a camp on the south edge. Doubt they'll take kindly to seeing you wearin' all black like a thief. Those people tended to be a little touchy on who they let hang around."

"That's alright," Clancy shrugged. "I was homeless, myself, for a time. Granted, that was over a hundred years ago, but need and despair rarely change. I brought a few tools to that end."

"Hm." She questioned, but didn't ask.

"Why is it just you in this town? Kitty inquired after a moment of silence.

"I am fairly certain there are other people, otherwise it would not be a town," Clancy pointed out even though he knew what she really meant.

"This little town? Not really," Clancy replied. "I suppose it might be able to support two, but not all vampires are interested in leaving their prey breathing."

"Most of the time, yes," Clancy confirmed. "Now and then I do not bother, but is now really the time to be having this type of discussion? I thought we were seeking you homeless people."

"You have inordinately skewed priorities," Clancy said blandly. "But if that is the case, are there not more worthwhile things to learn right before death?"

Kitty chuckled. "Depends on what you'll tell me. Any information is worthwhile, but not always applicable to the present circumstance."
