The Vampire's Apprentice

"Cool." He sullenly poked at the eggs, testing to see if they were ready to flip yet, then poured some juice in four cups.

The twins were still sound asleep, one with their head at the foot of the bed, and the other with their head at the top where it belonged.

She snickered silently, watching them for a moment before gently shaking the closest. "Wake up, sleepy heads. It's a school day."

The twins whined and grumbled and sassed a bit, but grudgingly they dragged themselves out of bed and dressed. They stumbled to the kitchen and scowled at the eggs on the table.
"I wanted pancakes," JP mumbled, rubbing his eyes.
"Tough, you get egg in a nest," EJ said, making up another batch. The twins each had one egg, and two eggs were sitting on a plate waiting for Kitty. "When does Mr. McCleary get up? How many is he going to want?"

"He works during the night and sleeps during the day," Kitty answered, slipping into a chair. "He'll be up again in the evening."

"Oh. Must be a cushy job, then," EJ commented, glancing around. He split one egg in half and gave the twins each half before putting the last three on his plate. He sat down and started eating instantly.

There was a moment of close-eyed silence from the girl before she opened them again and picked up her fork.
"I wish I could make eggs this well," Kitty said after a couple bites. "They're delicious."

"Mum made sure we could all make these by the time we were eight," EJ said with a shrug. "She said just in case anything happened, or if we were just hungry, there was at least one decent meal we could make ourselves. I'll walk the twins over to the house to grab their stuff and meet the bus."

"Cool beans." She finished what she had on her plate, then went to wash it and set aside before letting Sam in again; the usual morning routine, though a bit odd considering it was more than just herself today.

Sam went straight to Kitty's side and stuck to her.

EJ left the kitchen a mess and hurried the twins across the lawn. Time to head to school.

Kitty 'tsked' upon seeing the mess, cleaning it up immediately. With that done, she went looking for other things to tidy up, such as Clancy's bed and the room thereof.

Sam stayed close to Kitty still, not wanting to be too far after all the mess of last night.

EJ took nearly an hour to finally trudge back. He ignored Kitty, just sat by the window and waited. Occasionally, he checked his phone, but there was no news yet.

The girl kept on with the tasks of the day, though having few of them, she finished unusually early. Kitty found herself a comfortable spot on the couch with her book, not bothering EJ unless he decided to bother her.

There was silence. Twitchy silence as EJ shifted and twitched. He kept looking around as if expecting Clancy to come at any second. The time passed...

"It's not my fault!" he suddenly blurted in agitation, making Sam jump.

She paused on the words she had been reading and looked up.
"What's not?" Kitty asked softly, once again trying to be Clancy-like in mannerisms.

"This!" he stated, waving a hand. "What happened. It's not my fault! It's not!" But as EJ repeated the words, he seemed less than sure of himself.

"It's not!" EJ snapped. "So if you were thinking it was - cause I know you were! But it's not!" He glared at the window. "It's not."
