The Vampire's Apprentice

An eyebrow flicked upwards for a brief moment, but Kitty asked no questions, instead nodding politely and excusing herself from the home, returning to her own.

The house was more or less like she'd left it... except that something had forced everything out of the way by the windows. Sam stood at one of the back windows, growling, his hackles up, then ran to the kitchen and jumped onto the counter to glare out the window. He'd never once even shown an interest in the counters before, and now sat splay-legged on one glaring.

"Sam!" Kitty cried out. "Off the counter!"
His shenanigans seemed to cloud the part of her mind that took note towards his other signs of warning.

Sam jumped and looked toward her. Then he half jumped and half fell off the counter and galloped toward her. His rough nose sniffed her all over, turning all around her.

Sam growled and glared out the door. Then he shoved his way out the door and stood at attention in the front yard. He paced around, circling the house and sniffing. His territory needed searched!

Sam gruffed and finally calmed a little. There was nothing and no one in sight. A cat yowled from the other side of the fence, and he gave a single bark before trotting back to Kitty. Inside time! Inside was safer for his human.

Skeptically, Kitty returned to the house. She had her ears open the rest of the afternoon, keeping an eye on Sam for anything else that might possibly disturb him.

Sam was jumpy and growled at sudden noises, but he did not alert her to any active danger. Everything was still viewed with suspicion, and he patrolled the house vigilantly. No one was going to get his human!

Clancy came up as the sun went down and went to dress. He went for more casual attire today, though still refined and to his taste. He came out adjusting his loose tie and gave Sam a puzzled look as the dog examined him.

"He's been like that since this afternoon." Kitty had made her way into the living room upon hearing him downstairs, settling with her book on the couch. "Do you sense anything different, or is it just him?"

"It is a little difficult right now with him shoving his own smell at me," Clancy said, trying to gently but firmly push the dog away. "If he is upset, please keep him in here with you while I go look around outside." He managed to push the dog to Kitty then walked out.

Sam sat protectively in front of Kitty while Clancy slowly walked around the perimeter. Something did smell... off, but he could not put his finger on it. The scent was too faint and already covered by a multitude of other animals and people. It did smell... doggish. He frowned, his own hackles up as he took another lap around the house before going inside.

"It seems to have been another dog," he said casually as he walked in and closed the door. He took care to lock it securely behind him. "It is likely nothing, but I do not wish to discount his keen senses, either. Please remain alert and keep him with you. Just in case."

Kitty nodded. It was interesting, hearing him compliment the mutt he disliked so much, but the girl didn't linger on it too long. She had other things to say while there was time.

The "keen sensed" dog rolled onto his back and waved his paws at Kitty for attention.

"How was your day? Other than an annoyed beast?" Clancy asked, raising a prim brow at the dog.

She used her foot to rub at Sam's belly while she spoke. "Uneventful, but I went to see Norville earlier today. He's alive if not badly beaten up."

"Good! I am pleased to hear he is doing as well as can be expected," Clancy said, moving around to sit in his chair. "Are there any estimates as to when he shall be up and about again?"
