The Vampire's Apprentice

Clancy returned to his seat and moved a little closer to her. It was her choice to close the gap between them, and he would welcome her, but he would not push her. He looked up at the stars and said nothing.

In the end, she did move closer. Close enough she could rest her head against him and shut her eyes. Kitty sighed.

Clancy rested his arm around her shoulders and lightly rubbed her arm consolingly. Poor little thing. As long as he had any say in the matter, nothing like this would ever happen again. Unfortunately, he could not change the past as much as he would like to. Still, if the past had not happened as it had, she would not have found him.

"If you could live in one place, where would you go?" She asked him, breaking the silence. "Even if it's somewhere you've already been."

"Hmm, that is an interesting question," he said quietly. "The bottom half of Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana are tempting because of their more relaxed laws and their spaciousness, but there also tends to be a lot of suspicious cowboys and guns and a lot of open space. Pennsylvania, I think, would be another wonderful place, it is so beautiful, but I think... yes, the coastline of Connecticut. That is where I would go."

"I have been through there once, briefly, on my way elsewhere, and it was so beautiful," he smiled. "I've occasionally considered going back. I've always enjoyed a good coastline. I think I might have been a fisherman if I had led a different life."

Clancy smiled down at her softly. "And where would you like to be?" he asked softly. "Where would you like to go? If not to live, at least to visit?"

Clancy had no answer for that as he looked down at her soberly. How had something like this ended up with someone like him? There was no way in any universe this should have happened... and yet, somehow, it had. How? He had no idea. He looked up at the stars, searching for an answer that was not there.

"We should get you to bed," he finally said softly.

"You are already falling asleep," Clancy pointed out gently. "Can we at least have you fall asleep on the porch if you want to sleep outside? Perhaps in the back where it is more sheltered."

Clancy just chuckled and stood. "Come," he said, offering her a hand up. "We will walk slowly, if you would like."
Sam woke with a snort and scrambled to his feet, swaying groggily as he tried to figure out where they were going.

"Good, then I won't have to carry you," Clancy smiled. He led her along the street, taking Sam's leash in his other hand even though the dog did not need much guiding.

She burst into fits of giggles. Though the laughter eventually faded, her grin did not. They were still friends. Maybe more than friends, but no need to go filling her head with strange hopes. Just friends was enough.
