The Vampire's Apprentice

Clancy smiled at her giggles and her smile. Good. She still cared. Still felt friendship no matter how much he had pushed and hurt. He carried her home and awkwardly got the door to get them inside. He took her up to her room and laid her down before stretching out beside her.

Kitty tried best to keep from falling asleep as she lay, staring at the ceiling of her room. She let the silence go on for a long moment before finally closing her eyes.

"Hey, Clancy," Her sleepy voice asked. "If you could have one wish to spend right now, what would it be?"

"Mm.... I think we can do at least one of those things." She agreed softly. "And I've figured what I want for my birthday, too."

"A camera?" Clancy repeated, surprised. "You want a camera... in order to give me something? Is there nothing you want for yourself?"

"You're too late," Kitty yawned, finding a comfortable place beside him. "I was asleep a long... long time ago."

Clancy opened his mouth then shut it with an amused shake of his head. "Goodnight, Miss Kitty," he said softly, stroking her hair. "Sleep well."

She mumbled something, then finally decided to drift off.

The next day seemed only marginally more eventful than the last. There were things to do, as always, but something interesting was on the table with the note. When she went next door, atop the container of cookies was an envelope meant for Mrs. Mooney.

Mrs. Mooney, herself, opened the door, her brows drawn, and a few more gray hairs evident in her tight braid. She relaxed marginally when she saw who it was. "Oh, Kitty. Hello. Have you come to see Norville?"

"Thank you. You really don't have to keep bringing us cookies," the older woman said, relaxing in a smile. She took the box and stepped aside so Kitty could come in. The envelope earned a curious look and a raised brow at Kitty for explaination.

The girl shrugged at the look. "He said it was for you. That's all I know."

Kitty knew where Norville was, so she made her way back there.

Mrs. Mooney stayed behind and opened the note curiously. Her eyes skimmed the neatly written lines, and while at first she frowned, the corners of her mouth soon tilted up. She folded the paper and went to write a reply to give to Kitty before she left.

Norville was sitting up, his neck brace off for now and sitting beside him on the table. His swelling and gone down drastically, though the bruising was still colorful. He gazed quietly out the window, but he looked over when Kitty walked in, and his face brightened in a smile.
"Kitty Cat!" he greeted cheerfully.

"Been better, but, you know, not bad. The meds make everything fuzzy," he said with an easy smile. "Hey, I've been meaning to ask you something."
