The Vampire's Apprentice

"That one? You are certain about that? You don't want to look around longer?" he grinned.
Sam gave a soft growl of annoyance. He didn't like this guy. He smelled weird. Plus, he wanted to go home.

"Alrighty, then come with me, and I'll give you the papers for him to sign," Eddie said, gesturing for her to follow him to the office. "He can come by to pick it up tomorrow, then." He walked into the office and sat down at his desk. Quickly, he filled out the lines that he needed then handed them over to Kitty. "Oh, and, here. This is for you." He handed her a letter.

The girl smiled at the sight of the letter. "Thank you, sir. It's been lovely meeting with you," she said, taking the papers before removing herself to outdoors again. There, she opened the last note.

And now it is time to return home, my little wandering kitten. Be sure to watch the sun set on the horizon as you walk, and enjoy yourself tonight. I have one last gift for you upon your return, and I would like to see you receive it.
Best,
Clancy

"Hmm," She hummed happily. Kitty glanced up at the sky. "Should be just enough time...."

It was a ways past dusk when she finally returned to the home. The girl had not returned straightaway, but meandered a great amount. To be home again, however... that seemed a treat all by itself.

All of the curtains were drawn over the windows. Not a speck of light could be seen.

Inside the house, Mrs. Mooney shushed her children as they all waited quietly in the dark for Kitty to open the door.

Suspecting nothing—not even the drawn curtains and unusually anticipatory aura—Kitty opened the door and went to flick on the light.

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!"

The lights turned on, revealing a house festooned with celebratory ribbons, balloons, and even a banner. A huge birthday cake stood in the center, bright pink and white will all the trimmings. Mrs. Mooney was there with the twins, EJ, and even Norville sitting on the couch. Clancy stood off to the side, smiling as he watched.

Fear shot through her body, freezing it in place, and several seconds—or, what felt to her like seconds—seemed to pass before her senses returned.

Kitty looked between the Mooneys and Clancy, slowly letting the smile creep back onto her face as she relaxed. She wasn't sure what to say—or even if she should say anything—so the girl closed the door gently behind her and continued to grin.

Sam knew exactly what to say! He let out a loud bark to scold them for scaring them then trotted merrily over to the twins.
"Happy Birthday, dear," Mrs. Mooney said, smiling as she greeted Kitty with a quick hug.
"Man, you're ancient!" EJ told her.

"Not as ancient as some people," Kitty whispered under her breath, directed at Clancy. It was in jest, and she meant no harm by saying it. "Thank you guys so much! This has been epic!" She beamed. "I can't think of a single day better than this one."

"Cake!" Norville cheered, still clearly on meds.
"No, presents first!" JP insisted.
"Let's give her a minute to catch her breath and put her things down," Mrs. Mooney said firmly. "Which would you prefer to do first?"

"Hmm. I believe I'd like to place my things up stairs." She replied. "I shall return momentarily with an answer."

Kitty smiled, disappearing quickly up the steps to place her things in her room. She came back down with a paper in her hand—or, was it paper? It seemed just a little too stiff to be a page.

"I believe gifts shall come first, but only so I can give mine." She stated, then offered what she held in Clancy's direction. "This is for you."

Clancy's brow rose as he stepped forward to take the item she was holding out. "I thought the custom was for the person having the birthday was to receive the gifts, not give them," he said with a faint smile.

"Where's the fun in that?" Kitty asked in reply.

"I'd much rather give than receive."

Clancy started to say something, but the words died on his tongue when he caught sight of the paper. Or rather, the picture. He stood wordlessly while everyone watched curiously. He cradled the picture carefully in one hand and cleared his throat. "Thank you, Kitty," he said in a carefully modulated tone, his eyes still on the picture. "This means a lot to me."

She was still smiling. "I'm glad it does."

Kitty let the moment linger for a second more, then redirected the attention elsewhere.
"You know, I'd hate to see the cake go stale. Wasn't there something that came before we still need to complete?"
