The Vampire's Apprentice

"Oh, that's too bad," Norville said in disappointment. "Oh, well, Clancy did say we should take our time and enjoy this trip, so maybe we could come back in the morning. If you wanted, that is. For now, let's go see what they hide in the back!" He started off excitedly.

Following the path to behind the second building-frame, there was were two brick walls creating a square bottleneck. The path continued between two concrete buildings, directed by a sign that said, "National Liberty Museum," situated above a crescent-shaped bench. What caused Kitty to pause, however, was what lay directly behind the building-frame, just before the bottleneck path. Within a half-circle patch of green grass, small walkways on either side creating a Y, was a beautiful tree. She stopped to raise her camera.

"Wait," Norville said after she took her picture. "Go sit on the bench. I want to take your picture, please?" He held out his hand for the camera and Sam.

"Well, sure," Kitty shrugged. She passed him the camera and Sam's leash. On the left side of the bench was a small, oval-shaped sign. "Once Upon A Nation," it read, the image of a ringing bell pasted beside it. Free stories from 11am to 4pm.

Ethereal? Hmm.... How would she accomplish that? She rested her chin on her thumb and forefinger, thinking. How would she....
It wouldn't be hard to notice her thoughts wander a little; Kitty's expression did not hide that fact very well.
But what if that tree were magic? Trolls cut it and destroyed it, but somehow a seedling survived only to find it's way into reality. Maybe once in a blue moon....

Norville snapped a couple of pictures then grinned as he hobbled over to Kitty. "Ethereally puzzled, but close enough," he teased. "What are you thinking about?"

"Never mind!" Norville laughed. He winced as he sat on the bench. "I don't have much walking left in me, though. Either we should pick up the pace or just look at a couple more things," he said sadly.

"We've still got to walk back to the car." Kitty shrugged. "Think you can make it that far before giving out?"

"Sure," he agreed. "I just need a minute." He stretched out his leg and took a deep breath, letting it out slowly. "That's better." He stood once more. "So. Think we'll come back and try again in the morning when things are open?"

"Precisely."

The air was cooler in the afternoon, but humid as anything. Warm days meant sticky sweat clinging to one's skin, walking through invisible walls of moist air; darkness, when it finally appeared, would be relief. The sun, though having dipped lower on the horizon, was not yet to the point of sunset, neither would it be when they finally made a way back to the hotel. A small while after, perhaps, but not immediately, as if the fading daylight were giving the two familiars a break from their exercise before a new adventure was bestowed upon them.

Norvill yawned. "I'm looking forward to my nice, soft, motel mattress. This has been a lot of fun! But now I'm tired." He climbed into the car and closed his eyes.
Sam took a moment to shake himself off before moving to the back of the car, ready to get in.

Kitty silently agreed, opening the door for Sam. It was not a bed she was looking forward to, however. It was the silence, and the thought of further exploration—among other things. She would opt to wait patiently for Clancy, too. But for the moment, meandering back to the hotel was the goal.
