The Vampire's Apprentice

Sam hopped in and curled up next to Clancy's box. He let out the biggest doggy sigh and closed his eyes.
"I'm sorry I can't offer to help drive," Norville said again.

"Sorry. It's what I'm best at," he said, rubbing his arm almost fretfully. "Anyway, let's get back to the motel, yeah?"

"Yeah." She agreed.
It wasn't a particularly lengthy drive; maybe 20 minutes at most. Kitty, having little to say, didn't speak much. She enjoyed the quiet, sometimes.

Norville said nothing during the ride and sat quietly. He almost seemed to be asleep save for the occasional rub he gave his arm. He got out of the car without a word and left Sam to Kitty as he started toward the hotel door. With his walking cast, he was slow enough it would be easy to keep up.

Kitty hopped out and went to release Sam, giving Norville a mildly concerned glance. She followed after him quickly.

Sam trotted ahead eagerly. He was hungry! And thirsty after all that walking, but mostly hungry! It felt like forever since he'd last eaten!

Kitty opened the door to let the two boys into the room. Sam's bowls were filled, Clancy's plant watered, and Norville kept and eye on by the girl.

Norville went straight to the shower after grabbing a couple of plastic bags, and it wasn't long until steam wafted under the door. Sam ate and drank his fill then passed out on the floor between the beds, snoring loudly.

Several minutes later, a soft knock sounded at the door.

Clancy stood waiting, looking a bit more rumpled than usual. "Ah, good. This is the correct room. I had to judge only by your scent as you neglected to leave me anything letting me know which room," he said a touch frostily. He was feeling a bit grumpy after his second night of waking up in a trunk like a piece of luggage.

Kitty looked apologetic and invited him in. "Sorry, sorry. I suppose the small things slip my mind on occasion." Though, other details seemed to keep her on edge. It was difficult for her not to worry about Norville. "Did you sleep alright?" She asked.

Clancy opened his mouth to snap at her but caught himself in time. "Yes. Thank you. I slept like the dead," he said dryly as he walked in and brushed himself off. "I hope dear Norville does not intend to be too long. I desperately need a shower." He turned to her. "So. What adventures did you have today?"

She sensed he was not currently in a good mood; it may have been subtle to anyone other, but Kitty had the advantage of having been around him for a while. However, the tentative manner she currently held towards Clancy was dulled by a suddenly brightening expression—or, at least, the appearance of an excitable glimmer in her eye—when the opportunity came to present the day's adventures. For preservation of self, she did her best not to act as thrilled as she seemed.

Kitty glanced towards the bathroom door, then back at Clancy before moving to the bedside to retrieve the small collection of photos she and Norville had taken. As the girl unearthed them, she explained: "We went to a petting zoo while we were in Ohio. Did you know, I'd never even heard of an emu! But there were some there. Oh, and baby goats," she set a few of the pictures on the bed. It was clear what she thought of the small, hard-headed creatures simply by the tone of her voice. "Such precious beans!" Kitty said, then pointed to one of the photos. "Sam made friends with that one, there."

Memories of the conversation involving stealing a goat and the vampire's possible reaction to it made her smile, though lightly, almost as if she were hoping Clancy wouldn't see it. She looked to him, wondering what his thoughts were.

Clancy solumnly looked at each picture, studying the emu. "Hmm, I have heard emus, but I cannot say I have ever seen one, either." He looked at the goat pictures, especially the one with Kitty being "attacked" by the goats. He looked over her expression before turning to her.

"You wanted to bring a kid home, didn't you?" he asked dryly, a hint of a smile playing about his lips.

The grin she was trying to hide could no longer be contained. She clasped her hands behind her back. "What if I told you we did?" Kitty inquired.

"I would tell you that it is very cute and to put it back," Clancy said promptly. "Even if that meant driving all the way back to do so. I am sure it would be much happier with its mother."

Clancy gave her a stern look. "Miss Kitty, while I am fairly certain you have not bought yourself a goat, if you have... Put... It... Back."

Norville came out then, still trying to remove the plastic around his casts. He wore a loose shirt and gym shorts for sleeping in, and his tousled hair was still damp. He paused and looked between them. "What did I miss?"

Kitty bit her lip, trying not to laugh, as Norville came out. "I was just telling Clancy about the baby goat we brought with us," she answered. There was no point in trying to keep a straight face, so she played it off as enthusiasm.
