The Vampire's Apprentice

"I will see what I can get with my phone camera," Clancy said. He let himself into their room. "As long as you do not spend half the day in the museum tomorrow, we shall be arriving in Connecticut tomorrow afternoon." He paused. "Do me a favor and do not arrive until after dark so I might see?"

"Then enjoy your day," Clancy said with a smile.
Norville walked in and headed straight for his bed. He kicked off his shoes and flopped onto the soft mattress with a sigh.
Clancy turned to Kitty. "Is there anything you need?"

"Yes. I did not think you would still have questions," Clancy said. He pulled up one of the two chairs and sat. He frowned and adjusted. "Not the most comfortable chair I've ever sat in, but it will do."

"Of course I've still got questions." Kitty replied, though a touch quietly as she assumed Norville was trying to sleep. "He thinks up a lot of really good ones, to be fair." She settled herself on the end of her bed.

"He? You mean Norville?" Clancy asked, imitating her lowered tone. "He seems like the type. Slow waters run deep. Now... what are these fascinating questions?"

She nodded. "One of them was, 'what does vampiric sleep feel like?' More specifically, can you sense time passing?"

"No," he replied. "It is is like closing your eyes for a moment and then opening them again. It makes the passing of days rather confusing at times, but at least then there are no dreams."

"Sounds fairly practical...." Kitty considered this for a moment. "There was also the question of if you were around during the Civil War. He wanted to know if you took sides in it, I think."

"Oh, yes, I was, actually, although I did not take sides in it," Clancy said carefully. "At that point in time, I was still embroiled in the street gangs, so what was happening on a country scale was not really of interest to us, and New York was away from the main action, as it were."

The girl's expression scrunched just slightly. "Seems a bit... backwards, to me," she said. "So, if you were around during the Civil War... then... wait...." There was a pause and Kitty scratched at her head. History wasn't her strong point, as it happened. "Did the Great Depression come before or after the Civil War...?"

She nodded. "Right. So, then... what was that like for you? With the stock market crash and people out of work...."

"Actually..." Clancy cleared his throat. "While I had lost quite a bit of money in the crash, I had studied quite a bit of business in Tuskegee, so I felt I was on firm footing. The crash did remind me I was not infallible, but it was what came on the heels of the crash that really propelled me into the business I am in today. Basically... other people's loss was my gain." He shrugged. "It fits the vampiric nature."

"I suppose that makes sense...." Kitty nodded again. "That was three... wasn't it? I think it was. Hmm... I stored my notepad...." She gnawed on her thumb for a moment, examining the floor. "Why would I have done that?"

"Because you didn't think we'd be on the road as long as we have been?" Clancy suggested with a chuckle. "Don't worry, if need be, I will repeat the answers."
