The Vampire's Apprentice

She gave him a sideways look; a glare, but with amusement.
"What if I remain where I am?" Kitty asked in reply. She was enjoying this little game; there weren't many nights she could have a go at it past her initial refusal.

"Then you will probably fall off the edge and conk your noggin," Clancy pointed out patiently. "Laying down sounds like the less painful option."

"I could always hope," Clancy said wryly. "Once we get settled, perhaps you can move your sleep schedule to sleep later in the day and therefore stay up later at night."

"Maybe I will," Kitty agreed, resting her temple against his shoulder. "But we can jump that cow when we get to it."

"Mmm...." She thought about this. "If you don't go over the cow, do you go under it? Or just let it stand in your way?"

"I would be wondering why I'm anywhere near a cow," Clancy said. "Here, let's move up more on the bed where it is more comfortable."

Kitty sighed and relented to his relocation. "But if you were anywhere near a cow and it stood in your way, wouldn't you go over it?"

Clancy heaved a sigh. "Kitty... please just go to sleep," he half pleaded. "Enough with the cows. I would probably make it move somehow."

"Fine," she mumbled quietly. Kitty nestled herself under the covers, lying on her stomach, and pulled the blanket up to her chin. Stung, but not badly. He probably had places to be, after all.
