The Vampire's Apprentice

Clancy helped her pull up the blankets and tucked her in. Gently, he began rubbing her back in a circular motion. "Sleep well, Kitten," he told her softly. "You did well today. Only one more to go."

She buried her face in the blanket under her chin, closing her eyes and choosing not to respond, though it made her happy on the inside to hear.

Clancy patted her back gently. "I'm going out now. I will be back long before dawn, but I will be gone for a while. Take care." He stood and made his way to the door.

"I will do my best not to get staked or blocked by a cow," Clancy assured her with a smirk. He grabbed his hat and walked out, locking the door securely behind him.

Kitty poked her head out after she heard the door click shut, and she rolled over, settling back into the bed. The girl yawned again, but couldn't sleep. There were things to think about; she observed Norville's silent silhouette in the meantime, listening to the noises of night and the cars that drove by in the distance. Eventually, she closed her eyes again.

Nothing seemed to stir. Nothing seemed to be happening. Then, in the stillness, a soft sound made itself known. Easily ignored as the sound of the building settling or someone in another room, it was actually the sound of muffled sobbing.

Kitty didn't hear—or, if she did, said nothing. There was no movement; one might easily assumed she'd fallen asleep.

Eventually, the crying faded into a soft silence. Sleep had apparently finally fallen. At least until the sun rose.

Clancy came in briefly, slightly damp and smiling smugly to himself, and checked on the pair before disappearing into his trunk once more. He left a note for Kitty for a small eco motel for them to check into once they reached their destination in case they arrived before he woke. It wasn't much, but he didn't intend for them to stay homeless for long.

It was 7:30, but Kitty couldn't be bothered to go back to sleep.
No... she wouldn't go back to sleep. It was a choice.
Either way, she wasn't planning to wake Norville. As quietly as she could, Kitty took the opportunity to make sure Sam's bowls were still full and shower. The girl tucked Clancy's note in a pocket where she would find it later and disappeared into the bathroom.

Sam yawned and stretched before stubbornly following Kitty into the bathroom and flaking out on the mat whether she wanted him in there or not. He didn't make a fuss other than that, just waiting patiently.

Norville got up with the sound of running water and stiffly got dressed. It was easier to move without the arm cast, that was for certain.

Sam stayed in the bathroom to explore the water droplets.

"Hey!" Norville grinned, apparently just fine, if restless. "What's up for today?"

"Usually, the sky," she replied, tucking her pajamas where they should be. Kitty answered him, "Depends. Did you want to see if the museum is open this time or head on through? After breakfast, of course."

Norville shrugged and looked away. "I'm not hungry, but you should totally do breakfast. After that... I dunno, what do you want to do?"

That question she did not answer, instead backtracking to "not hungry."

"What do you mean, you're not hungry?" Kitty looked up from what she was doing. "I promise, you'll be hungry later if you don't eat."

"I'm just... not hungry," Norville said with another hug. "Don't feel like eating. I'll be alright. What do you want to eat? I think this place does breakfast."
Sam padded past them and started eating hungrily.

"Yes, I'm sure, okay?" Norville snapped, moving away from her. "Why do you keep-" He stopped himself, literally biting his tongue as he winced. "I'm sorry," he said more quietly. "I just..." He rubbed his arm. "Not hungry. I'm sorry I snapped."

She didn't appear notably fazed. "It's alright. Just checking." Kitty went back to what she had been doing. "Just making sure.... But then, I don't think you ever got tackled by baby goats, so perhaps it was I who bumped my head."
