How Green Becomes Wood

"Claire's the best," Sloan said, "but she's my best friend, so I have to warn you that if Alec breaks her heart, I will kick his ass. That's a promise."

Claire's face absolutely beamed, her heart beating up in her throat. She looked like summer, when the sun was too bright and high to bother with shadows. "Yeah," She said, rocking slightly up onto her toes, "It's a date. It'll be awesome. I'm really looking forward to it!"

"Fair warning," Xander agreed. "I don't think we'll have too much trouble, but if he gets out of line, you can have him."

Alec thought he was going to go blind or possibly pass out. Claire was so beautiful in her resting state, and her joy made her truly gorgeous. "Yeah," he said weakly, a truly sappy smile on his face as he watched her. "It's going to be great."

"Good, it's a deal," Sloan nodded, wondering if this is how fathers felt back when they decided together who their children would be with.

"Yeah, it will be," Claire replied with a little, happy giggle, swaying slightly. She knew they had to get to class, but she was just so excited she didn't want to walk away, even though she couldn't think of anything else to say. But that didn't matter, she just liked looking at him, especially when he was caught up looking at her like that. It was like nobody else was even around. He was just so cool. And tall, at least to her.

"Long as she doesn't break his heart," Xander told Sloan with a smirk and a wink.

That giggle was the cutest thing he'd ever heard. He really should go to class, but he didn't want to turn away. He scrambled for something to say. "Do you like boboa, then? Oh, of course you do. Otherwise, you wouldn't have suggested it."

"I once saw Claire cry because she found a dying moth on the pavement, I don't think she's capable of breaking anyone's heart," Sloan replied, "I sometimes think she's one of those Victorian children who just want to see the garden one last time who was accidentally sent to the present day."

"Yeah I love it," Claire replied, leaning against the lockers, "I like it when it's really sweet and fruity. But sugar is my downfall," She laughed at herself, "You said you've only had it once before?"

Xander frowned. "I can't decide if I should think that's adorable, be creeped out, or just glad she's not interested in me. Definitely sounds like Alec is in good hands."

Alec nodded. "I can't remember what flavor it was. I do love a sweet treat, too, but I've been learning to enjoy some savory. My dad, he can't stand sweets, so we try to humor him."

"She's just very sensitive," Sloan explained. "But we should really get to class."

"That's so tragic for your dad!" Claire gasped, her blue eyes wide, "I can't imagine not liking it! I know a combo at my go-to boba place that tastes just like fruity pebbles."

"Yeah, probably," Sloan replied, trying to catch Claire's eye.

"It's so easy!" Claire promised, in her excitement lightly touching Alec's forearm, "You get the blueberry tea and the taro boba. The first time I had it, I was SO confused because I knew it tasted familiar but I couldn't place it! Then I realized, oh my god, it tastes like fruity pebbles!"

Alec felt goosebumps ripple out from where Claire touched him. "I have got to try that! It sounds amazing!"

Xander wandered over and gave a quick whistle. "Hey, you two. Classes are starting, and you know what Ba would say if we were late."

"Ba has at least one romantic bone in his body, so he'd understand some lateness," Alec grumbled, but he let himself slowly get dragged away. "See you later, Claire?"

Romantic! He said romantic! Claire felt near to screaming in joy. They were standing there in the hallway, talking, and he had asked her out, and called it a date, and he called their conversation romantic! "See you," She mumbled, a dreamlike look in her eyes. How could a Tuesday be this magical?

Once the boys were gone, Sloan hurried up to Claire and, taking her arm, the two girls squealed and chattered in delight on their way to their seperate classes because this was a big deal.

"Have a good chat?" Xander asked mildly, highly amused.

"Yes, yes I did," Alec sighed dreamily. He very nearly had hearts floating around his head as he danced beside Xander.

"Oh, boy," Xander sighed. He was both amused and very confused. Alec had never been like this before. He must have it really bad for this girl. Was he ever going to be sane again?

Soon enough, the entire group chat of girls from the gymnastic team were buzzing about the fact "Rainbow" had finally asked Claire out. It was incredibly likely that at least some of them would have their phones confiscated by the end of the day, but this was what they had been waiting on.

When the twins made it to class, Milo looked at them confused, and then returned to his notes.
