How Green Becomes Wood

"If the teacher does not refuse, I am not opposed to you being there," Dark said, and then, pausing, said something sternly in Arabic, and after a bit of a shuffle on their end of the phone, Daizi's voice was heard and then Ivy began to cry. Then Dark continued, "Alec and Xander are concerned she has strong racial prejudiced. It may be helpful to have someone who does not look like us there."

"I will let you know what the teacher agrees to and when the meeting will be. Thank you for your assistance," Dark promised her, "and I will see you in two days dressed as a perfectly respectable, non-criminal patron of a speakeasy."

"You are welcome, and I thank you," Ciara said frankly. "I shall allow you to return to your family time now. Thank you for your time." She signed off formally, but listened for just a second longer to see if she could solve the mystery of what Ivy was getting into.

Dark and Daizi made their goodbyes, and in the final moments they did chide Ivy for pulling flowers she wasn't meant to, but they did so in Arabic.

Afterwards, they took a moment's sigh, and checking the time to see they were in a passing period, Dark called the history teacher.

"Oh, yes, the project he did. We can certainly have that appointment if you wish, but there has been no misunderstanding, I am afraid," she said calmly. "The fact is that he used illegitimate sources, and I did attempt to track those sources down, but they were dead ends. I am sorry."

There was a quiet, barely audible sigh. The sound of a teacher who was certain the parents were making a bigger deal of things than necessary. The parents who objected for their dear, sweet child who could not possibly have gotten a bad grade. Dark likely had those feelings during his years as a teacher, as well. "All right. When would you like to have this meeting? I have no openings today, I am afraid." She checked her schdule and started offering a few possibilities.

Dark heard the sigh and knew what the teacher was thinking, having many times before been the one to make such a noise. "That is fine," Dark assured her, naming the nearest date Daizi would be off work. Then to hopefully put her at ease, added, "I am sure you are aware we have had troubles with grades before, so we do like to keep on top of it."

That did put her a little at ease. It gave her hope that she'd be able to simply show them where Alec had gone wrong, and they'd accept it. She agreed to the time and date, and it was finalized. She had no idea that an actual FBI agent would be coming to visit.

Dark made a polite goodbye, and then texted both Ciara and Cooger about when the meeting was set for. Ciara, so she could plan to attend, and Cooger, so he could plan to watch Ivy for a little while. Those tasks complete, he sat back and went back to playing with his toddler so his wife could go back to work. Her lunch break was well since up, but she was salaried so she guessed it'd be okay.

After the school day ended, Alec hummed happily all the way home. Xander turned up the music so he wouldn't have to listen to it, but Alec didn't care. Once they were in the house, Alec popped off his shoes, touched the salt, and ran to find his family.

"We're home!" he called excitedly. "Where is everyone?"

"Here, in the living room," Daizi said, raising her head. She, Dark, and Ivy were all snuggled up on the couch reading picture books together.

"It sounds like today was a better day than yesterday," Dark commented.

"Hi, family!" Alec called cheerfully. He swirled through the living room and crashed onto the couch to join them. Despite the chaotic appearance of this crash-landing, there was actually a carefully measured calculation to his movements that made certain he landed in an appropriate space and did not actually crush anyone. "Ain't life grand?" he demanded, grinning as he draped over into Ivy's space.

Ivy's eyes widened when Alec came wafting into the room and draped over her. She then looked up at her parents and said, "Ack silly."

"Alec is very silly," Dark agreed with a nod.

"What made life so grand today?" Daizi asked, reaching out and petting Alec's hair.

Alec laughed. "That's a good sentence, Mini. Very good!"

"And very true," Xander agreed, following. He dropped himself far less gracefully but no less chaotically into one of the other chairs.

"Well," Alec said, smiling as his mother stroked his hair, "it just so happens that... Silly Ack has a date this Friday!"
