How Green Becomes Wood

"I did not have a goal." Dark told him, turning back to look at him, "You have your whole life. I understand the urge to have something concrete, I do, but your goal does not need to be for your career. Knowing you want a career which leaves you time for your hobbies is also having a goal."

"I guess I'm just feeling the external pressure when other people already have goals," Alec admitted. "Sloan has a pretty good idea of what she wants to do. Someone in my class, they're dating and have already decided they want to get married, where they are going to live, all of that. I'm not sure that's exactly healthy, but it would be nice to have something in mind. I guess for now I can focus on being an amazing dancer!"

"See where that couple is at your ten-year reunion. Sloan too. People with ideas of what they want to do very often do not end up doing exactly it. Whatever Sloan does will be magnificent, I cannot say as much for the soon-to-be newlyweds, I do not know them, they may be perfectly happy, but it is very likely they will end up living lives different from what they expect." Dark replied, giving advice he'd give to any uncertain teenager or young adult. But then he turned and looked back at Alec, speaking directly and firmly, "And you did not have the benefit many of your peers had to plan their futures in a normal way. You had to worry about surviving until the next month, what time did you have to think about the future? What time did you have when you were not sure when you would eat next? What time did I have when bombs were falling? Sloan, for all of the hardships she has with how her family is, has always been in a situation where the future feels real and actionable, she has never had to focus all of her attention on the present. You have not always been so fortunate. You do not need to measure yourself by a metric which does not apply. Anyway, people your age are meant to be figuring out their place in the world. Psychologists talk about it. You are meant to want to explore, if you never do then you are can end up in identity foreclosure, and that can be just as harmful as when you have absolutely no idea what you want, regardless of if you are exploring or not."

Alec sat staring at Dark for a moment. Then he leaned forward and hugged him tightly. "Baba, you really are the best," he whispered, forcing down the tears that pricked just lightly at his eyes. "Thank you. I love you."

Dark wrapped up Alec in his strong, secure arms and held him close to his chest, "I love you too, Albuma." He rubbed Alec's back, "Whatever you do decide on will be spectacular, I have no fear of that."

Alec sniffled just briefly before getting ahold of himself and calming himself down. He sat up and smiled at Dark. "I'm really glad I sprained my ankle that winter day where my history teacher could see," he admitted. "I certainly didn't plan that, so... who knows what might happen next?"

"And I am glad I happened to be out buying Daizi a present in that area of town," He replied warmly, properly warmly, in a way anyone would be able to perceive as he smoothed down Alec's hair, "There are not many times a husband can surprise his wife with the announcement of children."

Alec couldn't help laughing at that. "This is true! This is very true. And twins at that! I'm just glad she reacted better than some dads do." He smiled and leaned into Dark's touch. He never got tired of that sensation. "Thank you for caring. I know it's a weird thing to say, but I feel I need to say it."

"She only surprised me every other time. I deserved a chance to be the one to do it. Although I was, technically, always the one who read the test to her. But it was never twins, as far as we were aware." He exhaled lightly, spending some quiet, contemplative moments looking down at his son. It was a wonderful thing to be able to do. His son. "I am not going to say you are welcome. There were no other options for me, but to care about you."

Alec smiled and finally looked away to take a deep breath and let it out slowly. "I guess we probably upset Ivy," he said, remembering that they hadn't actually taken the time to say hello to her.

"Oh, you very much did." Dark replied, a somewhat bemused look just barely pulling at his features, "You would have thought you had tossed her into the trash or done something much more horrendous."

"Oh dear. I'll have to make it up to her," Alec sighed. "Poor Ivy. But I don't think either of us were in a good mind frame for properly saying hi, anyway. Is she awake still?"

"She had cried herself to sleep, but it sounded over the baby monitor that she woke up again and Daizi got her. She will likely not sleep well tonight, but honestly, she has not been recently even without this, so I think we are taking her nap as a win, even if it was not under ideal circumstances." Dark replied.

"It is 'developmentally appropriate.' Apparently. It is because her brain is working so hard all of the time. But the other night there was nothing we could do to get her to stop crying and go to sleep, and that was why she was so grumpy that one day." He rubbed his face, "It will be fine, she will be passed it soon. She sleeps fine if she is being held or snuggled in bed with us, but if we dare try and move her or set her down..."

"Poot thing, but it can't last forever," Alec said sympathetically. He pushed himself up off the bed and stretched. "I guess I should go down. It won't be long until dinner, right?"

"It may be a little delayed, because we have been with the two of you," Dark said, standing with him, "and with Ivy having a nap at the wrong time, but it should be ready fairly soon. I should go and help Daizi with it, unless Xander is already helping, then I should take Ivy to make it easier to get cooking done."

"She will probably like that, assuming she forgives you." Dark joked mildly, heading downstairs where Daizi was cooking while bouncing and singing to Ivy, securely carried in the baby sling, although this time on her mother's back.

Alec looked for Xander, but he wasn't back inside yet. He decided he wasn't ready to have a talk with his brother yet and went for Ivy. "Ivy! Do you want to come play with me? I am so sorry I ignored you earlier. Can I make it up to you?"
