How Green Becomes Wood

Daizi smiled softly, turning around and holding Ivy close to her shoulder, "Everyone needs a game. But no, no offense. Go rest, darling. We all need rest. And then, on Sunday, we get to go to the Pumpkin Patch." She kissed Ivy's head, "Are you excited, Hummingbird? You've never been, not when you've been out in the world."

"She is sleeping," Dark murmured.

"I know," Daizi replied, rubbing her back, "I'm just excited."

The twins headed upstairs, and Xander took a moment to wipe down and clean up, but it only took him five minutes. Then, as he'd said he was going to do, he went to his room and sat in the corner. As he walked through the room, he tripped over one of Alec's stuffed animals. He'd gotten from... some fun time. A claw machine or something. He couldn't remember. Xander scowled and kicked the poor animal back over onto Alec's crowded side of the room. Alec liked his stuff, but did it have to migrate into his part of the room? Xander sighed and shook his head before sitting in the corner, facing the flat wall, and putting in his earbuds. He just wanted a bit of music for a bit. Then time for bed. After a while, once he felt a little calmer, he got down his journal and started writing about the day.

Alec came in after a half-hour long shower and collapsed on his bed. He meant to draw or color before bed, but in seconds, he was sound asleep and lightly snoring. Today had been a really good day!

Xander got up from his corner after a while and covered Alec up with a blanket before going to bed. Today had been a wonderful day!

Daizi brought Ivy up to bed and lay her down before joining her husband and snuggling in beneath his arms. It was her turn to be the little one and he was more than happy to oblige. There they were, a full, complete, beautiful family. Forever.

"I feel like something has to go wrong now," Dark admitted quietly with his cheek against Daizi's hair.

"It won't," She promised, "It's just your head. It plays tricks on you."

"Every time things are this good..."

"Nothing is going to happen." She said, pressing herself closer against him, savouring every moment of this before they swore it off for almost an entire month, "But I'll draw our cards tomorrow, if it'll put your mind at ease."

"Spider?"

"Mmhm?"

"You already put my mind at ease. Just being with you. I am so grateful for you," He ran his fingers down her spine, "None of this, nothing in my life, would exist if it were not for you."

She smiled, burrowing her cheek against his chest, "I'm going to fall asleep right here."

"Do not do that, your back will hurt in the morning."

"It'll be okay, you'll carry me to bed."

"Yes," He whispered, "I will."

And he did, and slept peacefully beside her and woke to a brisk, clear morning. It felt like a new year. Ivy was a bit cranky, due to the disruption of her schedule the day before, and a bit more willing to drive her parents, especially her mother, ragged, but it wasn't too difficult to bare. The day before had been perfect, and this day was exactly what they needed to settle into this new, permanent state of being. The Wahid-Dark household at the Necropolis. Daizi kept murmuring it to herself, like a girl trying out her crush's surname.

After an easy, sleepy day passed by without too much fuss, they were preparing on Sunday morning for a wonderful trip to the Pumpkin Patch.

Xander had to convince Alec to dress down for the pumpkin patch. It was technically a farm with straw everywhere. Did he really want to wear his nicer clothes out to where it'd get potentially torn or stained? Alec argued that clothing was to be worn, not kept for the "optimal time," but he finally consented that maybe it was better to dress for the event. So, they dressed identical in black jeans, a plain shirt, and a jean jacket plus black belt. They did not have identical hats, but they did both wear knit hats, and Alec wore the scarf Daizi had given him.

Both eagerly looked forward to the patch, leaning forward in the car the whole way there, and when they arrived, the only reason Dark was allowed to go first was because he had the payment method. Then they scampered ahead to get a look at everything available. They returned in a reasonable amount of time, both talking about what they'd seen, their words tangling unintelligibly.

"Have you two decided to always dress in matching outfits these days?" Dark asked in amusement. He had forced himself to dress down for similar reasons to what Xander had said: there was no point in dirtying his nice clothes. So, he wore dark plaid pants, black combat boots, a black sweater, and a long, trailing black scarf over a long, trailing coat. He had rings on every finger, had painted his nails black for the occasion. Underneath his scarf, should he decide to remove it, he wore a necklace Daizi had given him with a silver bat pendant. Beside him, Daizi hadn't dressed down nearly as far, and stood in a tiered, flowing skirt she had hitched up on one side with a skirt hike patterned with a leaf and three phases of the moon. Along with it she wore a velvet bell-sleeved top decorated with stars, a shawl to keep warm, and an electroplated raven's skull necklace Dark had given her. Like her skirt hike, it was decorated with phases of the moon and had an amethyst insert. To top it off, she wore a black wide-brimed hat, dark cat-eyed sunglasses with spiderwebs at the points, and broody lipstick. But, she did wear nice, sturdy boots. Every single one of her piercings were being utilized to their fullest potentially. With them, their sweet baby Ivy, was in a sweet black outfit with a big, smiling ghost. They couldn't wait.

"Don't get too far ahead!" Daizi exclaimed as they stepped stepped inside after paying, "We've got all day!"

"I never remember what to do first," Dark mused, taking a deep breath and filling his lungs with autumnal air.

"It started accidental and ended purposeful," Alec told Dark in regard to their clothing choices. He was feeling underdressed compared to them, but at least he was wearing black pants and a black shirt! They all had some form of black!

When they returned from their quick exploration of the main pathways, Xander said, "We should do the maze first while we're still fresh and there's good light."

"After the maze, we should pick our pumpkins. I know that then we'll have to drag them along, the there's wagons to use, and we want good lights to see pumpkins, too," Aelc stated.

"The maze is a good idea,"

Dark looked down in the stroller where Ivy was looking wide-eyed at all of these new things, "I think first we have to get the pictures out of the way before she somehow manages to dirty her clothes. I do not need many, but I want to have her in those green creation-of-Frankenstein hands and by the measuring sign. So we can see her grow up here." He looked at the twins, "I would force you to also take the pictures with the sign and at the chairs, but I know you do not like being photographed."

"You know what? We'll do it," Xander stated. "Let's do pictures."

"Really?" Alec asked in surprise.

Xander glanced at his brother with a stab of uncertainty. "I mean... if you're cool with it."

Alec smiled and took Xander's hand. "I'm cool with it. Let's go!"

That said, they headed for the green hands and the measuring sign, leading the way.

"We will take them, then." Dark replied, quietly pleased. Pushing along the Halloween decoration covered stroller, he and Daizi walked along, happy to still be in arm-in-arm. Once arriving at the hands, while Daizi unbuckled her wide-eyed infant, Dark asked, "How do you want to do this? One of the three of you, or both as a group and individuals?"

"How about just, um, just a group one?" Alec asked. "We can probably get individual ones as the day goes on." He eyed the hands suspiciously. "These are just chairs, right? They aren't rigged to do anything or more or anything like that?"

Xander went over to one and thumped the wrist with his foot. "Feels solid to me. Sounds plasticy. I think we're good. No grabbing action here."

"Of course they are just chairs," Dark replied amused, "Sit, we have to put Ivy in your lap.

"If you make too big of a fuss about the chairs she'll think they're dangerous," Daizi told them, as if Ivy had any tangible idea of what was happening, "But if it will make you feel better, I will sit first as proof they are not harmful."

"As if I would have any of you sit somewhere I thought to be dangerous. None of you are Cooger."

"Poor Cooger," Alec giggled as he carefully sat down. He situated himself, squirming a little, and then nodded in satisfaction. "Not bad. Not greatly comfortable, but not bad." He reached out for Ivy. "Ivy! Come sit in the hand with me!"

"I feel like we're sitting in the hand of some kind of underworld demon," Xander muttered. He looked at the back of the hand. "With very clean fingernails. Scoot over a little. I want to fit, too."

The twins both got situated on the hand and looked up at Dark.

When Ivy was passed over, she stood on Alec's lap and put her arms around his neck, but when Xander joined them she looked over and him wide-eyed and grinning. She reached out towards his face with one hand while her father, behind the camera, was trying to get her attention so she would look his way. But she was too interested in her twin brothers and this weird green chair to look towards her parents, regardless of the tricks they tried.

Xander made a face at Ivy and kept leaning back slowly while Alec attempted to pull her back while laughing. Xander inched back and back while trying to get Ivy to look to her parents until he overbalanced on the edge of the chair and toppled off. Alec yelped and then started laughing when he saw Xander was fine. Xander sat on the ground for a second, snorting, and then got up to try to sit on the edge again, also laughing.

Hearing the tumble, Daizi first asked if everyone was okay and after getting confirmation she laughed, and when she did, so did Ivy, "The chair really could've tried harder to catch you. It can grasp, after all."

"I am just glad I caught that," Dark said wryly. After the twins were settled, he called Ivy one last time and managed to get a picture where she was nearly completely facing the right way. Then he walked over and handed his phone over so the twins could scroll through, feeling particularly proud of the ones that caught Xander toppling to the ground because of everyone's expressions.

"Those are some fantastic pictures," Alec snickered, looking at them. "That last one is really nice, but this one," he pointed to one of the ones with Xander falling, "is the best."

Xander snorted. "You would. I like that one," he said, pointing to one with Alec caught in a goofy expression. "Okay. You guys get to go now."

"Mama, you should sit on Ba's lap for this one, and look spooky!" Alec told them. "I'll hold Ivy."

"I wish I could see them," Daizi sighed softly. Hearing her, Dark gently squeezed her arm.

"I know," He replied, sliding his hand down her arm to hold her hand, "Come on, my darling, it is our turn."

Sitting on the chair, Dark pulled Daizi down on her lap, only feeling a little bit anxious their combined weight would be too much for this plastic hand-shaped chair, but it seemed sturdy enough. Once Daizi was seated on his lap, Dark leaned forward to spread her skirt out nicely and then told her where to look for the camera. He didn't smile and she only smirked, but it made sense for them.

"Smile for the birdy," Xander said, snapping pictures.

"What birdy?" Alec asked.

"I dunno, but I heard it in a movie once. Milo probably knows."

"You should ask him sometime," Alec mused, looking over Xander's shoulder.

"Done. I think I got a good one," Xander said uncertainly.

"This is the most I smile," Dark replied drly, but it was enough to make Daizi laugh for a moment, and she may have toppled due to their unequal weight distribution, but her husband held her firmly in place. Once Xander said he had a good picture, Dark took the phone so he could look at them.

Xander shoved his hands into his pockets and shrugged awkwardly. "I'm not used to taking pictures, but I think there's one or two that look okay?"

"I think they look good," Alec assured Xander even though he wasn't the one being asked.
