How Green Becomes Wood

Alec gave him an odd look but shrugged and nodded. "Sure. It's your house, and I did say I'd show you my projects," he agreed willingly.

Dark's phone pinged with a text from Xander, who, after some thought, had sent Dark the picture of Daisy looking over his shoulder with the caption, "My micromanaging boss."

Alec cackled at the picture. "He never was very good at working with people, but working with horses seems to suit him quite well!" He hopped out of the car with his vase and tulips and trotted to the house to give them to Daizi.

After a bit, Xander sent back a picture of one of the barn dogs lay curled up in the sun near Big John's hooves. Big John stood outside, dozing in the sun near another horse. There was a fence between them, but they seemed to be enjoying some quiet camaraderie in sunning and sleeping. The horse had come a long way since he'd first come to the barn. HR asleep on the job. Typical.

Daizi thanked Alec for the tulips, feeling their bloom carefully while Ivy played loudly with her toys in the living room, "That's one thing I think is lovely about green houses, you can't have tulips in October without them."

Even HR deserves their thirty minute break, you should return later. After a moment he added, Big John is looking better.

Xander looked at Big John and gave a little nod before texting back, Mama should come see him again. Then he put away his phone and went back to work. He didn't have much left to do.

"You're right about that," Alec agreed. "Shall I put these on the windowsill in the kitchen? I think they'd like it there."

You should invite her, Dark replied, stepping into the living room to say hello to his baby before following Alec into the kitchen, completely aware of how his baby chose to crawl after him after seeing her father. And how Enkidu decided to follow her.

"I think they'd be lovely there," Daizi agreed, "It is nice how many flowers you are allowed to take home."

"It is really nice. They bring in so much life and vibrancy! And look hilarious next to skulls and gothic architecture," Alec grinned. "I love it." THen he leaned over. "Hi, Ivy! Do you want to see a flower? Shall I lift you up to see it?"

"Oh, habibti," Daizi smiled sympathetically, "It's okay, I know you like those flowers, but they're not safe, Hummingbird. Ssh, baby."

Ivy continued to cry, eventually calling out, "Baba!" mostly because when she opened her eyes as she took a breath of air to fuel her cries, she saw him first.

"Oh, tifla, my sweet girl," He cooed, walking over and taking her from Alec, "What is this noise? It is only a flower, my dear."

Alec sighed but willingly handed Ivy over. "Next time, I'll be sure to bring a flower you can have. Something you can even chew on!" He headed back for the living room but then paused and glanced back at his father. "Did you want to see the stuff once she's calmed down? Unless you have something else you need to do."

Dark patted Ivy on the back and swayed, resting his cheek against the top of her head, "After she is calm, I would be glad to go see." He murmured something to Ivy before kissing the side of her head, "Besides settling her, I have no plans."

"Okay! I'll meet you upstairs," Alec promised. He dashed happily upstairs and took a few moments to sort out the projects he was working on at the moment. Then he settled down to do a little homework until Dark was free to come upstairs.

Alec hopped off his bed and went to open the door. "Hi, Ba!" He stepped back and held open the door for Dark to come in.

The twins' room truly looked as if two people lived there. On Xander's side, there was the long stuffed snake, a couple of large plastic horse toys, and a handful of books on subjects he was interested in like horses, cookbooks, and leather working. The immediate area around his bed and his wardrobe was empty and clean. Not a thing on the floor, not a poster on the wall, nothing extra.

To say the other half of the room was Alec's would be not entirely true as Alec's things had clearly overtaken more than the halfway mark. As he'd said, there were clear paths to both beds and the back window, easily wide enough for someone like Daizi to enter. Every square inch of surface otherwise had something in it. Clothes, books, toys, stuffed animals, mementos, homework, broken items, and artistry supplies. Posters and papers covered the wall around his crowded and buried bed. There were even a couple taped to the ceiling. It was an explosion of color and things.

Dark stepped in, looking around and resisting the urge to pass his hand over his beard. It hadn't even been this long since he was last in here. But there were things everywhere. Internally, he was dashing through his mental rolodex for something positive to say so Alec wasn't crushed and he knew he did not have much time to find it.

Eventually he landed on, "You have really worked hard to decorate."

"Thanks!" Alec said brightly. "Although some of these," he pointed to the papers taped to his wall, "are study notes for school. Not exactly decorative, but useful as it reminds me to review when I see them. And I read that some people say to visualize what you want in life, and to do that they put an image representing it on the ceiling so it's the first thing they see in the morning. I don't sleep on my back, so it's not exactly the first thing, but it's close!" He pointed upward at the pictures on the ceiling. Two were of cats. The other of a lighthouse. The cat pictures were quite large.
