How Green Becomes Wood

"You could be doing competitive paint drying and I'd be interested," Daizi promised him, and meant it. She may not have understood any of it, but she did nonetheless research judo to try to understand what she'd be hearing.

"I am incredibly interested," Dark said, "and I am sure Ivy-Qadira will be delighted to watch."

"You are hardcore, Mama," Xander said seriously. "More hardcore than Ba, even. He's only incredibly interested. Not paint-drying competition level."

"Ivy likes anything to do with movement, but I bet she's going to be annoyed that she can't join in," Alec grinned.

"That is not fair, Daizi would not have to sit and watch the paint," Dark pointed out, "She could sit there and face the paint but let her mind wander and nobody would be aware of it."

"Wow," Daizi replied, feigning offense, "Goose Mongoose Dark, you're going there?"

"That is a low blow," Daizi clicked her tongue.

"All I am saying, is if my lovely, intelligent, compassionate wife were asked what colour dried first, and she did not know, nobody would think anything of it, but if I were to not know, people would recognize I had stopped paying attention," Dark replied, holding up his hands in mock surrender.

"Wow. You can't bluff you're way out of that?" Xander asked blandly.

Alec tutted disappointedly. "It's so easy! Pull a long face and discuss the different colors and then say how it was very close between this one or that one."

"So easy," Xander said, shaking his head.

"I think it would be much easier for her to than for me to," Dark told them.

Daizi turned towards her husband, and finding his tie, grabbed it and used it to pull his face towards her, "Goose-topher Mongoose-tav Dark, how dare you," She said playfully scolded him, really just trying to admonish him.

Dark, now folded over and forced to look at his wife like that, blushed. And not a single word came into his head.

The twins stared at their parents for a moment.

"Goose-topher?" Alec said.

"Mongoose-tave," Xander continued.

"Dark," Alec said.

"Tie," Xander finished.

Alec looked at Xander. "Where do we go from here after having received forbidden knowledge?"

"I am going to go get my bag and get ready to go," Xander said firmly, standing up.

Hearing the way Dark's breath had hitched and his quiet stammering, a devilish smirk crossed Daizi's face and she didn't loosen her grip, "You should really be ashamed of yourself."

Swallowing hard, he allowed himself to be pulled closer to her, not really sure what he was thinking, but then she cruelly let him go and stood up, "Pull yourself together, babe, we only have to survive until Saturday." Then she stood up, scooped up Ivy, and said, "I'm going to get her dressed."

Dark groaned and rested his head against the tabletop, "I am just a man!"

"So am I, but you don't see me going all ridiculous about girls and things," Xander grumbled, heading off.

Alec made certain Xander couldn't see him and then looked at Dark and made the shape of a heart with his fingers. "Soon, you will be free!" he whispered to his father. "Goose-topher." Then he cackled and chased after Xander to get dressed.

Dark grumbled, not looking up and hiding his still-blushing face against his arms. He didn't even try to argue or fight back to either teenager.

Laughing softly, Daizi carried Ivy upstairs, "This is the price we pay for love."

"I am just a man," He repeated pitifully, knowing he had to be careful about how he teased Cooger later that day so it wasn't revealed how powerless he was to his own wife.

Xander was ready to go in no time and waited patiently by the door for the others to join him. He spent his extra time petting Enkidu and telling him what he was about to do.

Alec took a bit longer as he wanted to look good for his brother's Debut, then he came thundering down the stairs in what he felt was his best and most colorfully coordinated outfit. He was ready to go!

"Do you want to stay for the whole thing or just watch my bit?" Xander asked his parents. "We can take both cars so you're not stuck there."

"Do you want us there the whole time?" Dark asked, picking up Ivy's diaper bag, "I do not know how easy it will be to keep her entertained, but I would like to be there for as long as you would like us there, and surely we should go out to eat afterwards."

"We need to stay long enough to support Peter, too," Daizi added.

"I don't want you guys to get board. Or the mini," Xander said, shouldering his bag. "It's okay if you've got to leave."

"I plan on staying the entire time no matter what color the paint is," Alec said stoutly.

Xander didn't say much in the car as they drove, leaning back and watching the scenery pass. He was nervous deep down, but not scared. Just... hesitant to step out on that mat. He hated that he felt that way. Alec leaned forward, sometimes sticking his head up between the front seats to talk to his parents and watching the road. He was excited! And nervous for Xander's sake.

The gymnasium was not particularly full when they arrived. It was a fairly low-level competition that didn't attract many viewers outside of immediate friends and family of the participants. Inside, thick mats covered the entire floor outside of a narrow strip at the far edge. Most of the mats were black, but four squares of blue had been set up at the center with plenty of space between them. Those were the arenas. SImple, not too comfortable bleachers stood on either side of the court, and contestants and their entourages milled about as they waited either for the bouts to start or for their friends to show up. Xander split off from his family and went to get changed into his white Gi. It didn't take him long, but while he was gone, Peter's family arrived.

"Daizi! Dark!" Sally called out as she strode toward them. With her hair pulled back in a low bun and in a pencil skirt, blouse, white sweater, and heels, she looked ready for a business meeting, not a sports bout, but that did not dim her smile as she strode toward them.

Jack and Peter were both dressed a little more casually, though Jack's polo shirt was clearly of the more high-end type than the cheap version. They smiled and waved as well.

"Peter! Hi! You're going to be great!" Alec cheered.

Before Xander went off to get ready, Daizi took one last moment to wish him well and tell him how much she believed in him. It was quiet and not something that would catch his attention, but she wanted to tell him again. Then when she heard Sally's voice she turned and smiled brightly, "Hi Sally! Hi Jack, hi Peter--good luck today!--It sounds very busy in here. Like there's a lot happening all at once." Dark only nodded politely.

"Thank you, Ma'am," Peter smiled. "I appreciate that. Right now, everyone is getting ready, which I should, too."

As Peter headed off to change, Sally stepped closer to Sally and Dark. "Shall we sit together?"

"You don't have to call me Ma'am, Peter," Daizi chuckled, "I'd love to sit together, Sally. I think I need a chaperone, I don't know if my husband can be trusted."

Dark rolled his eyes and looked down at Ivy, "Your Mama speaks falsehoods."

"That sounds like a topic I would love to delve into more when not in public," Sally chuckled. "This way. I believe Peter will be on this mat, which would put Xander on that mat as they are in different classes, and up here on the bleachers will give us the best line of sight. Those of us who can watch. Hello, Ivy, love! Might I hold you for a bit?"

Xander returned as they got settled and stood on the bench below them, hands hooked in his belt since he didn't have pockets. "It's busier than I thought."

"Really?" I was thinking it was a small turnout," Alec remarked, wedging his way between his parents. "No funny business, you two."
