How Green Becomes Wood

"I'll tell you about it later," Daizi chuckled while Dark handed Ivy over to Sally.

"What funny buisness could we possibly get into?" Dark asked Alec dryly, looking around at the crowd, "This is about the turnout I remember from Cooger's wrestling meets."

Sally held Ivy so she could stand on her knees and babbled at her happily until Ivy wanted to turn and see what was happing.

"I do not underestimate you two. You're as bad as and maybe worse than the teens I go to school with," Alec said, eying Dark distrustingly.

Peter came up to join Xander and grinned at him. "It's great you decided to come! I can't wait to see how you do."

Ivy babbled at Sally, grabbing at her face, hair, and jewelry if she had it.

"I worked at that school for a decade, I do not think that is true," Dark replied indignantly. Shaking her head, Daizi ruffled Alec's hair.

Over at the door, Milo slunk his way in, looking around for where he was meant to be. One great thing about Xander and Alec's parents were that they were easy to spot in a crowd which helped him to navigate to the right place.

Sally did have earings that dangled a little, but she was able to keep them out of Ivy's reach. She did let her grab her necklace. It was a silver chain with a looped metal teardrop, but she wasn't worried about it.

"Working at is different from living in," Alec teased.

"And you are turning out to be just as bad as them," Xander complained, rolling his eyes at his brother.

Peter laughed and turned when one of his teammates called his name and waved. As he turned, he spotted Milo. "Oh, hello, Milo!" he called, waving.

Continuing to babble, Ivy smiled up at Sally, playing up her cuteness to the best of her ability.

"We can agree to disagree, I was required to interrupt such things." Dark said dryly. Honestly, in his opinion, he and his wife were not that bad. They were physically affectionate, but Daizi was blind, and it wasn't like they were kissing with tongue in public. This was the truest motivation to win this horrible bet.

"Hi Peter," Milo mumbled, walking up to him, "It's busy here."

Xander turned to see Milo and offered him a fist bump.

"The higher up in the competitions you go, the more crowded they get," Peter said cheerfully. "Nice to see you."

"Hello, Milo, dear. Would you like to sit with us?" Sally offered, nodding to the empty seats next to Jack.

An announcer called out for the contestants to gather, and Xander nodded to Alec and his parents before heading down. Peter trotted after him confidently, having done many, many competitions before this. That wasn't to say he always won, but he was more accostomed to the event than Xander.

Milo greeted his friends and then awkwardly slipped up to sit near Sally and Jack, feeling rather out of place. Before the matches themselves began, Sloan and Cooger both arrived independently, but recognizing each other from so many events, they went in together and easily found their friends.

Of course, Cooger sat down besides Dark, who immediately turned his head and only vaguely raised his eyebrows.

"Shut up you b******." Cooger whispered and the pair of them shoved each other before Cooger turned to say hi to the rest of them before they all settled in for the matches to start.

Alec leaned forward and waved at Sloan happily, the best he could do from where he was sandwiched between his parents. He turned to watch the floor with interest.

The contestants were divided into different groups based off of skill level and weight. They started at the lowest end and slowly worked their way up. Each of the four blue squares supported one pair of opponents, meaning four pairs fought simultaneously while four referees watched closely and coaches either stood nearby or paced. There were only six schools in attendance, two medium-sized and four smaller schools, but not every student of each school had come, meaning it was a small pool of contestants, and each bout only took maybe five or ten minutes. It still took nearly fourty-five minutes before it was Xander's turn.

Xander took a deep breath and stepped up to the edge of his designated square. He bowed to his opponent across the way, and his opponent did the same. They crossed into the square, paused to bow again, and then squared off. The ref snapped a word, and they stepped in to grapple. It was a fast and looked like a lot of weird jerking and dancing around with both of them getting a tight grip on the other's gi, yanking back and forth as their legs swept at each other. Suddenly, they went down, and for a moment, it resembled a good-old wrestling match. A match where Xander came out on top. He won!

The pair separated at the ref's call and stood. They bowed to each other, shook hands, and parted.

"He won, Mama! He won!" Alec cheered.

The match was too quick for Dark to describe to Daizi, although he did his best to. When Xander won, Daizi squeezed Alec's shoulder before clapping. Dark smiled in his way, proud to those who knew him, and clapped respectively, but Cooger---still an athlete in his mind---stood and cheered. Not to a point that was inappropriate, he had kept a close eye on how winners of previous matches were cheered on so he didn't cause a disruption. Sloan reacted similarly, but Milo had just been taking pictures

After he stepped out of the main area, Xander looked to his family and smiled, raising a hand to wave to them, reserved as always and yet glowing with pride. He'd won his first match! He'd won! He did not expect to win his first ever competition match, and yet, here he was!

Alec cheered and clapped excitedly, waving back enthusiastically.

Sally and Jack both clapped, quite impressed and pleased for Xander, though they were more reserved. A halfway point between Dark and Cooger.

Then, it was on to the next match. And the next. And then Xander was up again. He only needed to win one more bout to place as his group was fairly small, and two more to take first. He knew this, and that knowledge was clearly wheighing on him.

All of his friends and family in the stands, except for Milo who was too awkward to make much noise, cheered in their way for every match Xander won.

Daizi had taken Ivy back into her lap and turned her out towards the floor, "Who is that, habibti? Who do you see?"

Dark leaned in to help point exactly to where Xander was and when Ivy noticed him, she squeaked and bounced in her mother's lap. Unlike the rest of her family, she didn't know she should try and restrain her volume.

Xander glanced toward Ivy, and while he didn't smile, he relaxed just a little. He could do this. Even if he didn't win, Ivy wouldn't care. She'd be just as happy.

He and his opponent bowed and approached each other. Just as with his previous match, they scuffled quick and harshly, but this one went on a bit longer. Finally, Xander managed a perfect throw and pinned his opponent. The ref sounded the call, and Xander rose the victor! He bowed and shook his opponant's hand and stepped off.

Meanwhile, Peter's group had started in another square, and Sally and Jack were distracted watching him and his bout.

When Xander won, Dark turned swiftly to Daizi and told her before even Alec could, excited and proud of their son's achievement. Cooger, of course, was on his feet, cheering for Xander with the true and unbridled energy of someone who had himself competed not dissimilarly from this, once upon a time.

Squeaking happily because everyone else around her was excited, Ivy looked between her parents and at where they were pointing at Xander and clapped happily for him.

At this last win, Milo also clapped a little bit, looking up from his camera, and Sloan did her best to split her attention between Xander and Peter.

Peter didn't even glance at his family or friends, fully focused on the task at hand. He won his bout with what could only be called ease, even in this sport, and graciously helped his opponent up before bowing and shaking hands as was proper. He stepped off to the side to allow for the next pair to spar, only then seeing his friend had made it far enough to place. He went over to congratulate Xander, as did a couple of other teammates, and then they went back to focusing.

Xander had to wait for one other pair, and then it was his turn again. He put up a valiant fight, but, in the end, he lost. He still bowed and shook hands like they were supposed to and stepped to the side. He felt... relief. Truly and deeply proud of himself for how far he'd gone, but also an undeniable sense of relief.

As soon as they knew they were allowed to, Dark and Daizi scooped Ivy up and hurried over to Xander to praise him for what a great job he did. Cooger followed behind but at a distance, wanting to give the parents time to praise their kid first.

"Xander, that was amazing!" Daizi said excitedly, holding onto Ivy so she didn't accidentally touch Xander in her excitement and pretending like there was a single thing Xander did in his entire gambit she recognized, "You did so well! I told you!"

"It was nice to see you fight and not be required to break it up," Dark said, a bit more muted in words. After all, Xander always teased them for being too excited about his achievements, "Well done."

Xander blushed and tried to play it cool, but it was pretty obvious he was proud. "Well, I guess I'll place third unless something happens. Not a big deal."

Alec threw his arms around Xander. "A big, big deal! I'm so proud of you!"

"Yeah, yeah," Xander grumbled but didn't push him off. He glanced at Dark. "Thanks. I can come sit with you now as long as I'm available. I can't leave yet."

"What could happen?" Daizi asked while Cooger, Sloan, and Milo finally came up to praise Xander for how well he did after his very first competition.

"So, how did it feel?" Sloan asked, "I know you used to be really hesitant about it before."

"No idea," Xander admitted to Daizi. He waited until he had a little breathing room - meaning Alec let go of him and went to sit down - before addressing Sloan. "It was not bad. It still felt uncomfortable with all eyes on me and having it be more than just a training match, but it wasn't as bad as I thought it might be." He moved up to sit next to Sloan and Milo with Alec coming up behind him. "I think I did alright."

"To be fair, you didn't have all eyes on you, people were also looking at the other guy," Sloan pointed out, giving Xander a fistbump, "But I think you did more than alright, dude, taking third on your first competition isn't anything to sneeze at."

"Hardy har har," Xander said sarcastically, but he returned her fistbump and couldn't help a little grin. "Thanks. And for coming. You, too, Stitch."

Peter was waiting on the sidelines for his next match, and when it was finally announced, he stepped forward with the same intensity of focus Sloan had when approaching the bars. He won that match again very smoothly, as well as the next one. He struggled more on the next match but still won. By the end of the competition, he was in line for first in his division. He almost lost when his opponent nearly pushed him out of the ring, but managed to recover and throw the other down with an audible thump.

"Oh, well done," Sally said more than cheered, pleased and proud of her son.

"That boy has all the right stuff," Jack agreed, nodding.
